Keep up Martin Wink Thumbs Up ( I think Stan has edited the original post ) .

Thanks Stan - I suggest that it would be useful to change the penultimate paragraph of the locked forum thread to say something like this:

Amendments (with thanks to RRPhil):
- If possible, use a genuine Filtran replacement filter
- Replace fluid with fresh fluid until it starts dripping out of the fill hole

Both the ZF & GM transmission fluid levels need to be set with the engine (and therefore the transmission oil pump) running so that the torque converter, oil cooler and its pipes are all full of fluid and not draining back down into the sump.

- Start engine, hold foot brake down and cycle through each gear position holding for 5s (from park to drive & back) to ensure that the valve block galleries are full. Ensure that you finish in Park with the handbrake on.
- WITH THE ENGINE STILL RUNNING wait for the transmission fluid to reach 43C and top up as necessary
- Refit fill plug, tighten and turn ignition off
- Reset the transmission/ gearbox controller (with ignition off, push accelerator pedal to the floor; ignition to position 2; continue holding accelerator pedal to floor for 60s; ignition off; pedal release)

Thanks Stan. Thumbs Up

Now for the scary bit - after topping up to the correct level, the car drives like a different beast with only a small prod required on the accelerator to generate the required speed...

Might be being a bit fussy with the fluid temperature there! Anywhere between 35 & 45 deg. C for the GM transmission (TD6) and between 30 & 40 deg. C for the ZF 5HP24 (V8 petrol) is fine. These are Land Rover’s figures - ZF themselves actually quote 30 to 50 deg. C for their 5HP24.

Just a quick reminder on the fluids too :

ZF 5HP24 ('02-'05MY V8 ) = Mobil ATF LT71141

GM 5L40-E ('02-'06MY TD6) = Texaco Texamatic 7045E

ZF 6HP26 & ZF 6HP28 = Shell ATF M1375.4

ZF 8HP70 (4.4 TDV8) = ZF LifeguardFluid 8

Sorry Sal, I'm just an amateur working on transmissions that have already been removed from the vehicle, in my garage at home. It's just a hobby. I don't have a vehicle lift or anything like that.

Just about to do this job. How do you check temperature of transmission oil prior to final top up?
