I recently did my annual transmission oil change with the correct Texaco fluid, checked the level at 43C and also followed the instructions to reset the gearbox controller (ignition off;pedal to the metal; ignition to position 2; continue holding pedal to metal for 60s; ignition off; pedal release). I then did a 5 mile drive to verify that the gearbox was happy - it was much quieter than before and kick down was happy.

However, this morning on kickdown (after about 3 miles from cold) I'm now getting "rev hunting" which sounds (before I rapidly back off) as though the gearbox is cycling between two gears - I'm thinking that maybe the fluid level is slightly low when cold (hoping the gearbox at 80k miles isn't starting to fail) ...

All suggestions welcome!

You have a TD6(?) - so it has the GM rather than the ZF transmission.

Did you have the engine running at tickover as you set the final fluid level?

Whoops - no the engine was off (and yes it's a GM - title edited now)!

I will test the fluid level with the engine running this evening - thanks for that Phil .

No problem Both the ZF & GM transmission fluid levels are set with the engine (and therefore the transmission oil pump) running so that the torque converter, oil cooler and its pipes are all full of fluid and not draining back down into the sump. In addition you should also move the gear selector lever through each of its positions (holding for 3 seconds in each) and then back to Park just before the final level is set to ensure that the valve block galleries are also full. You already know about the importance of the fluid temperature.

I ask because I am about to do the oil change, now my new GM box has reached 25K miles
(and no, I still haven't got around to fixing my High/Low transfer problem ) .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Yes, having read it, the advice given in the Wiki is incorrect. The guy describes how the filler plug was removed with the engine off and, not surprisingly, fluid poured out as the torque converter and valve block started to drain down. This would have resulted in the transmission being significantly underfilled. If you remove the filler plug without the engine running, and the transmission began with the right amount of fluid in it, you should get over a litre of fluid down your arm.

Also, now I'm on a roll , could I implore people only to use the genuine Filtran filters in their transmissions. In the long run it really isn't worth the few quid that you save in using a cheap pattern part imported by a reboxer from Taiwan/ROC or wherever.

Have you decided to get the fluid changed in your 6HP26 then? I wasn’t certain because of Cam-Tech-Craig’s post about the official notice that the dealers had received from Land Rover rescinding previous advice to replace the fluid for just about each & every problem identified with the transmission. I’m interested in the technical reasons Land Rover gave for this and wondered if Craig had sent you a copy of the notice?

Yes I have as I'm not sure of the box for life issue,
The slight thud I get now and then is apparently normal,
But I did take the advice from Craig and sat on it, as I was fairly
New to the site I didn't actually send the pm to Craig that I thought I sent .
But what are your thoughts, I'm just thinking to prolong the life of the box I'm sure that if
You clean all the out, that this would actually help the box.

Guys, you can edit the wiki yourself to correct or add information - that's the whole point

I tried Martin - but it says that the topic is locked. The text that I wanted to add (given Phil's advice) was:

- If possible, use a genuine Filtran replacement filter
- Replace fluid with fresh fluid until it starts dripping out of the fill hole

Both the ZF & GM transmission fluid levels need to be set with the engine (and therefore the transmission oil pump) running so that the torque converter, oil cooler and its pipes are all full of fluid and not draining back down into the sump.

- Start engine, hold foot brake down and cycle through each gear position holding for 5s (from park to drive & back) to ensure that the valve block galleries are full. Ensure that you finish in Park with the handbrake on.
- WITH THE ENGINE STILL RUNNING wait for the transmission fluid to reach 43C and top up as necessary
- Refit fill plug, tighten and turn ignition off
- Reset the transmission/ gearbox controller (with ignition off, push accelerator pedal to the floor; ignition to position 2; continue holding accelerator pedal to floor for 60s; ignition off; pedal release)
