2005 L322 can gateway failure?

Has anyone experienced problems with the can gateway module used in the 2005 L322?

My audio system (MY2005, MOST) has gradually become more intermittent in recent months. The problem started about three months ago, the touchscreen was slow in coming to life after the engine was started. The original delay gradually got longer and longer until nothing happened for 20 minutes after the car was started.

The system has packed up completely now. I sometimes get about twenty seconds of normal operation (orange light either flashing or off) then silence and a black screen. This happens randomly when I'm driving.

Read various posts on the internet, and thought that it must be the battery, run the car for a while and the system voltage rises. Did various checks, battery OK.

Read more posts on the internet and thought it must be water related corrosion of the connectors to the modules in the boot. Stripped everything out, bone dry, no evidence of water, no evidence of any problems whatsoever on any connectors. All still look new.

I have no 'flashes' on any of the fibre connections, at any of the modules in the boot. There is no evidence whatsoever of any MOST bus activity.

I have faultmate MSV2, this shows 'VSE016, unexpected error' when I try and connect to the can gateway module. I cannot connect to any of the entertainment units - same fault code. There's nothing wrong with the faultmate - it communicates perfectly with every other module in the car. I know from previous experience that the faultmate used to be able to communicate with the can gateway without any problems.

So...... I'm thinking that there may be a problem with the can gateway module. I don't even know where it is, if it is known to be problematic, how expensive to replace...... I really don't want to resort to going to my dealer. Previous experience suggests that their technicians know even less than me, and that their idea of solving problems like this is 'we'll replace everything sir! It won't cost more than a few thousand pounds.....!'

Can anyone offer any advice or help? Could this be something really simple?

Thanks

Paul G

The can module itself, have you checked it over and maybe opened it up to check the circuitry inside?

I'm not far if you want to pop over during the days this week and play swap the module?? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Hi pal the gateway module is behind the touch screen it's a little white box about 2" by 1" I think from memory you have to take the top of the dash to get to it I am not really sure but i think it keeps all the ccf files in there for your car so you need to be able access it to reformat the new gateway with your car settings if it's that, hopefully it's just the most bus that has come loose also dont know if you have done this but try and post on blackbox's forum to get some better technical advice (ronnie and gabriella) are really helpful

Hope this helps

kingpleb where abouts are you? Swapping the module would be a good test. Skippy says it lives behind the touchscreen, I've had this out before but can't remember seeing another module in that position that has fibre connectors - but then again I wasn't looking for one at that time!

I have a copy of the CCF file so programming a new module wouldnt be a problem. If we can swap I reckon it work work well enough even with a different config file loaded to know if mine was faulty.

Sure the module is under the integrated head unit behind the touchscreen don't think the most fibre optic goes to it think it's just the can bus but don't quote me on that Thumbs Up

I may be wrong, but i think that I read on another post that the can gateway is also interfaced to the MOST bus, as the 'source'. I wish I knew more, but there just doesn't seem to be that much info on this unit.

Also any chane you could email me your ccf as I'd love to see one to see what can be 'played' with in there? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

done a little more digging for you and found this

A gateway module is located behind the TSD. The gateway module is the link component between the vehicle bus systems and the audio/telephone system MOST ring. When the vehicle is unlocked, the gateway module receives a system 'wake-up' message on the CAN bus. This message is then passed on the CAN bus from the gateway module to the integrated head unit which then 'wakes-up' the MOST ring components by energising the infotainment relay. Refer to the Audio System section for further details on the gateway module.

The IHU is the timing master for the MOST system. The IHU controls and manages the MOST ring and the system components. It is also responsible for the MOST security system. Each component in the MOST ring has a unique serial number. The component serial number is stored in a registry file in the gateway module. If any component serial number is not recognised, the entire audio system will not function

might be worth a try to have a look at the infotainment relay this might be shot and not letting the modules wake

One thing to check before you start digging around the touchscreen - a tired battery gives slower and slower start up from the touchscreen - how old is yours (you start getting lots of symptoms before it is noticeably slower to crank) ?

Battery is fine.

Skippy - any idea of the position of the infotainment relay? Thanks for your help so far!

Found the infotainment relay - RHS rear fusebox - and it definitely isn't energised.

I'm thinking more and more that this is a gateway fault. Still unable to get any comms to the gateway module. Does anyone know the part number of the module? Or even the LR description? I phoned my dealer today....... They had no idea what I was talking about!

The relay is in the boot on the right hand side there is abit of of kit that helps diagnose most problems it's called a most prism sorry cant remember the part number it goes in place of the most ring and re loops the light so effectively bypassing the module the only thing is you have to go round every module though to find where the link is broken Thumbs Up

Hope this helps

Still no luck, if I put a bridge across the infotainment relay contacts then I get the land rover logo permanently on the touchscreen. All fuses are good. I think I will be dismantling the dashboard this weekend! Whilst I was driving to work today the radio burst into life for about thirty seconds before once again getting the black screen of death!
