I've noticed that the tyre/road noise increases on my car when I'm turning, more so to the right than to the left. First noticed it a while back, driving along my road where I live - you can only do about 20mph due to the cars parked and the width of the road but there's a 90 degree right-hander where, well, all I can say is that the tyre noise increases - noticeably. It's less so on a LH turn, and at higher speeds you don't notice it, probably because of all the other noise going on (wind etc).

At first I thought it must be the road surface on that particular bend but now I'm noticing it elsewhere.

Tyres are Michelin in the correct 255/50R20 size, can't remember the model name but they're M&S stamped and have done c. 6000 miles, still with loads of tread (5-6mm I'd say without measuring).

Any thoughts? All I can think of is wheel alignment, although the car steers and tracks true and the wheel is dead straight.

tyre pressures ok, dont know if this would make a difference but you never know.... ... - .- -.

Did check them when I first noticed the noise Stan and car still does it!

never noticed it myself really....the range does have a very good turning circle but at max i suppose it would strain the rubber a bit...is it more noticeable in standard or access ? ... - .- -.

It's in standard as the bit where I notice it most is still 2-300 yards from home, so it's standard, about 20mph and not full lock, just whatever it needs to do a tight-ish 90 degree turn, although it's still on the public highway at the time, so it's not TOO tight a bend, just residential.

best do what my wife does when she hears any car noises, she turns up the volume on the radio..  ... - .- -.

I've noticed this on mine as well. As it is in with the dealer this week for another issue I thought I would ask them to check the bearings asi am suspecting a noisy cv joint (my noise does or get worse or better when applying the brakes which would normally correct a noisy wheel bearing at low speed) or some other differential type noise....

Keep us posted Simon. Mine does it whether there is power on or not.

I'm telling myself that it's nothing. Especially as I'm off to the Alps for a week next weekend......in the FFRR........

AND the warranty runs out this month!!

Have your front hubs checked for wheel bearing play...

There's no bearing play at all in either front wheel. HOWEVER....there is some play in the rack. Detectable from both sides, you can move the wheel slightly from side to side accompanied by a slight knock as the play in the rack is taken up.

It's not the track rod ends, they're fine, and the track rod moves with the play in the wheel - therefore it's in the rack.

Question is, is this normal? I know on some cars designed to be used offroad, there is some play in the steering systems (although that's typically older LRs I guess, and of course they're steering boxes, not racks).

But I guess that could be the cause of the tyre noise, if the play is allowing the wheel(s) to chatter slightly when cornering?

i dont think its a mechanical problem cappo....if the tyre is making the noise then its the tyre thats at fault..
i would try the same manoeuvre at a different location , maybe a supermarket carpark and if it still does it then its the tyre , if it doesn't then its the road surface at home..

many years ago i had a old motor with unheard of tyres on it and they squealed like starsky and hutch when going round corners at 5 mph... ... - .- -.

Another quick check for you, if you run the palm of your hand over the tread of your tyres one at a time. First in a clockwise direction and then in an anticlockwise direction and see if your tyres are wearing in the shape of a saw blade... i.e. in one direction your hand slides easily and the other gets harder (as if stopping on saw blade teeth)

Ive seen this as a problem on quite a few RR's with Premium brand tyres lately... Causes all manner of strange noises like wheel bearing noises etc etc. The driver does not notice the problem until it gets really loud! usually because they drive it every day!
