Just got home tonight through the snow in Glasgow and felt that the car (2006 FFRR S/C) wasn't freewheeling when I lifted off the throttle. When I parked up there was a smell of burning and the nearside rear disc was glowing red hot.
Yes; I did release the handbrake
No; I've not been to the pub
Any ideas on how to release it, (without going out into the cold cold snow and jacking 2.8 tons up in the air) to see if it's a brake sticking (Brembo's) or if the handbrake is jammed on. Offside rear wheel is ok.
Does the handbrake operate on both rear wheels by cable?

Sounds like a binding calliper. Mine does it as well (2006 s/c) and was informed, via this site, that it is a common trait in 2006 vehicles.

I have had the wheel off and tried to loosen the piston off by taking the pads off and pressing the brake pedal to push piston out a bit and then try and lever the piston back in. Admittedly this had made no difference to the thing and I have now ordered a new calliper.

The handbrake works as shoes inside the drum the wheel is on so shouldn't cause a ring of fire on your disc.

So, prob new calliper required.

Gents - strange coincidence. Arrived at work in mine today and could smell the brakes when I got out. Offside rear wheel hot, but can't say I had noticed it performing differently. Luckily there's a Landrover/Jag indy just over the road so got it in there. Disc and pad ok (luckily, as they're nearly new) but Caliper knackered. Waiting for the part to arrive at 2pm before being fitted. I normally like to scarper early on a Friday too.....

Had this on my 07 S/C. I took it to a local garage in Royston. They freed off the calliper but a couple of weeks later, it reoccurred. I took it back and he replaced the calliper only charged me for the parts (no labour). Result.

Mine had the same issue, both rear calipers replaced and no problems since !! Cost was peanuts, calipers came to 70 Euro each with return of the old ones.

Had the brake fluid renewed as well as it seemed quite "murky". Just to keep the system clean. Suggest you do the same and do both calipers, not just the sticking one as the other is bound to go as well (on mine the non sticking side was actually looking worse for the wear but not sticking yet(?)) MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

On a serious note; don't ignore the symptoms (sluggish freewheeling; drop in mpg; burning smell ; red hot glowing fricken brake discs!). John at Burnfield Motors warned of the risk of brake fluid boiling and brake failure possibility if left unattended. Sounds alarmist but not worth the risk hoping it will " free itself /go away"

hi Guys, new to the forum. Was advised to look here for ideas on my binding rear brakes 2006 FF S/C Have managed bv a process of bullying to get the dealer to fit new rear discs, pads and calipers as a goodwill gesture. That said, I have worn two sets of discs and pads out in 53k, and having had the last set in October 2011 I now need another set as a result of this binding. I know its a S/C but fuel consumption seems to have been awful for a very long time, and I reckon the dealership should have picked up on the caliper problem when they replaced discs particularly as it would seem from reading your posts that its a common problem. Anyone know why as a matter of interest?
