Poor MPG with TDV8

I bought my TDV8 last Sept and for a while the average MPG was showing as 24.5. More recently it's dropped to 21.8 doing a very similar mix of driving. Is this normal? I tend to drive very steadily and prefer to sit back and enjoy the comfort.

I'm also considering a remap from J&E which should help the MPG given what I've seen on this forum.

Any advice/guidance welcome

Buz

When was it last serviced ? Could be filter related/ quality quantity of oil?

Have you been using a different filling station? quality of fuel ?

I had mine mapped and initially I was getting about 32mpg but average I get about 28.1 mixed driving 26 ish if im booting it. Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Have you tried a decent run of booting it hard and really clear it out?

As per googs servicing is the big thing, and if you stick to the LONG LR services then it will likely drop before the next service as it slowly gets more clogged (fuel filter i mean).

If its due a service soon or not had one for 12months then get it done.

But before you do try and find a good local supplier of Bio Diesel. Stick about 40litres in then fill the tank with normal diesel and repeat for another tank full. then on the 3rd tank stick 70litres in and fill the rest with diesel.

This will really flush the system and ensure any crud is cleared out and dumped in the fuel filter but it could cause it to clog up a bit, so you may feel the engine struggle at times if it clears a lot of gunk out as fuel starvation has been known in some engines that do this due to the crud deposits in the tank finally shifting upstream and clogging the filter to its extreme. Simply swapping the filter over resolves this and some people even carry spare filters as on vehicles like the RR its only a 10minute job if that to swap it at the roadside Smile

Poor MPG

I also have disappointing MPG averaging 22.5 for the last 1000 miles including a trip to wales towing a small trailer, I would of expected close to 26-28 MPG.

Most journeys are 5-8 miles on country lanes with no real hold ups

According to the dealer the vehicle had a full service prior to delivery (purchased from a land rover dealer) Question

Has been OK apart from needing a replacement alternator Sad , which took over a week as the first replacement was “US”, still bill picked up by the warranty. Smile

I was also considering a JE re map as they are only 6 miles down the road, May wait until the warmer weather to see if MPG improves

I'm pleased to report that I am still returning 30+mpg after 12,000 miles with no change. However, most of my driving is long distance motorway 60-70ish Whistle Mph apart from the M25 when I put the car in Park and watch Top Gear on Dave in the traffic! Current MY2020

same for me as AMD.

I'm getting 600 miles to a tank, 32mpg on my commute (150 miles either way) provided the M25 is moving that is!

I did notice it drop quite a bit before the service though, had it done two weeks ago and I am back up to 30 - 32mpg. - Ad augusta per angusta -

Same as scarey i get no less than 19-20 around town and at least 24 on a fast run.

In the cold weather you should get a better MPG as the engine is more efficient Smile

I'm a firm believer that engines from time to time need a bit of a blow out ... especially diesels. By that I mean that you rag it a little ( boot it hard from the roundabouts, accelerate hard up to speed and hold lower gears longer ) I used to throw injector cleaner into a tank of the V6 diesel passat and then drive it hard and it seemed better for it. Over time, things do bung up a little. and a decent work out for the engine can clear the system out.

I also recall having a discussion a long time ago moisture build up in engines which can happen on short journeys ( repeated sub 10 mile journeys etc - just cause the needle says engine it hot, doesn't mean its warm right through ) ... and that over time, it can get into the oil and lead to emulsifying it ( the light coloured mayo junk you get in breather pipes etc ) The solution was to give the engine a proper run to get up to temp and keep it there for about 2 hours to clear it out. ( Think motorway cruising ) the idea being that you get the whole block thoroughly warm and it gives it time for the oils and moisture to separate and breath out properly.

My old carbed V8 used to feel free-er and more eager after being given a bit of a thrashing ( but that sounded good though ! was fun )
My P38 V8 used to feel better after being given a decent eager run.
My 2.5V6 tdi passat definitely felt smoother after it was given a blow out ( it could really shift )
Cant really say I've noticed it on the 4.4 V8, although I do take it longer journeys more regularly which are at speed, so its made to work anyway. V8 or else ...

Thanks for all the replies sent.

I've not been doing anything different, same journeys, same fuel. I'll check the filter and see if that's the issue.
The car was serviced when I bought it so that shouldn't be the issue.

I have a late 06 TDV8 and have found the same, i get about 24 mpg combined with motorway, country lane and town. I had mine mapped using the Superchips Bluefin and it goes very well but no mpg improvement.

That said it hasnt been serviced in 12 months so is going to get a full once over including fuel filter in Feb. Im going to have the drive train software update done too incase that helps a little. It hasnt been into a LR dealer for software since 2007 so is in need of a good update Rolling with laughter

All in all i get 24 mpg regardless and with 325 bhp now so i think the service and a good run will probably see me start to get the right side of late 20's hopefully Question

I have used DMS to re-map a 3.6 Tdv8 and two 4.4 Tdv8s and the results are stunning in terms of extra torque, power, smoothness and extra MPG. I get a consistent 31mpg from the current one. From memory i got 28 from the 3.6.
Happy to pass on my contact at DMS if you want it.
