Warn Receiver Shackle

Has anyone used one of these with standard RR tow bar armature? I'm sure I've seen one in someones photos but can't seem to find it again.

Assembled ours from hardware from the local agricultural merchants for the shoot vehicles. The LR experience L322's also have them fitted.

just to give an indication mine, cost around £6 for the shackle (load rated too) and £11 for the receiver bracket - the receiver bracket is just mild steel bar stock with a couple of holes drilled throgh it, 1 for the hitch receiver pin and the other for the shackle - I would have had one made in the workshop but at £11 not worth the bother - it was 18 months ago though!

There were also some listed on the ebay US site a while back as the receiver brackets are standard over in the states for SUV tow bars and quads

I just use a rated shackle for about 7tonne that fits nicely once bolted up over a standard tow hitch. Machinemart I think I got it from for about £7 Smile

I've got a couple - they work well.

I also have a Jeep Wrangler with a 2" reciever so I have 1 on that & one on the RR

Got them from the US when I was shipping a load of Jeep bits - they were around $20 IIRC

the 2'' square hole that the fullfat has also happens to be the standard american tow hitch size...there are a few tow hitchs on ebay that will fit and they are alot cheaper than the OE landrover ones.. ... - .- -.

Be careful though as in my experience, most don't fit....

The RR receiver seems to be slightly smaller than the one on my Jeep - I have 3 different drawbars like this & whilst they are all very close none of them will actually fit - http://www.me.ford.com/servlet/Satellite?c...ry-overlay

The RR parts are a much tighter tolerance and don't rattle as much as the Jeep does. Though with a pin rather than a bolt, there is still some play & therefore rattle, but I like to be able to remove mine, so stick with the pin.

Also the receiver on the RR is buried quite a long way under the bumper - the RR parts are longer & made of solid bar, whereas the US ones are typically hollow square section & whilst you can get extenders, I would be much happier with the solid bar.

Both of the shackle adapters fitted when they were new, but the one off the Jeep has some surface corrosion on it now & will no longer fit all the way into the RR receiver, but fits the Jeep no problem.

I think it was as I remember the winch as well.

It's something to have as a just incase I need to be pulled out, or need to assist others, better ground clearance with one of these than the tow ball.

There are a lot of choices around. If I can't find some 50mm or 2" stock next week to make my own I'll get one off the shelf.

On the subject of winching, I would like to add a little bit of input.

Remember that any winch has a maximum pull, and any equipment supplied with the winch such as rope and hook etc. will generally be rated at a higher breaking strain than the winch can pull. This means that generally any failures are caused by something "added" in the pull, such as anchor points, strops, shackles etc.

Most people are aware of "ground factors" which is the amount of resistance the surface has. E.g. It is easier to pull a vehicle on hard standing than soft ground. However many people do not realise that if a vehice is actually buried half way to the axles in clay/mud, the factor increases massively to up to 3 times the weight of the vehice being towed.

So, with these things bearing in mind, remember that an FF weighs close to 3 ton. So make sure any shackle used is rated to at least 10 tons. If you can, always use a bow shackle rather than a D shackle. Also check that wherever you are going to attach a winch to a vehicle being recovered is a part of the vehicle that will withstand the actual pull.

BTW, I am a winch instructor with the Fire Service. If anyone wants to know more about winching, just ask.
