Unless you're doing serious mileage, join the "crazy" gang and go for a s/c.
You won't stop smiling every time you start it up.
This pleasure might be slightly diminished by the "occasional" technical issues that arise, Whistle

Nothing changes as far as fuel economy is concerned.
My first car in 1966, UCS 730, was a Series 1 ex Army Landrover (1953 vintage I think).
Cost £40 to buy, and I used to fill it up (fuel tank under the driver's seat) with a mixture of paraffin and petrol, as 4 star was expensive; about 5p a litre, and it did about 15mpg (coasting downhill) same as my FFRR.
Only problem was; the engine kept running when you turned the ignition off !!! 2006 Supercharged

Had that run on effect sometimes with an old R5 Auto i used to have... soon fixed after a tune-up by local garage, £40 well spent as it seemed to be a new engine after, more power, less fuel used and very quiet, even when thrashed Very Happy

Anyway digressing way OT now Very Happy

I know where your coming from with the old Landies being ex military tanks under seat constantly.sawing at the wheel to go straight, so had enough of that chit as for budget don't really want to go over 30K if I can help it but up to 40K for the right car Big Cry Somehow I don't think I'll get away with a S/C as I already have a Harley edition F150 5.4 petrol and a 2.1 Harley that's cost both arms and legs to build ( by myself I might add) and it will have to be my daily ride.

I drove both when I got mine 3 years ago, I know its not a hot hatch but the TD6 was just too slow for me, Put my foot down coming off a roundabout and it seems to take an age to build speed up, TDV8 completly different story.

As it happens I pick up a brand new TDV8 this friday so have my car up for sale or handing to the dealer in PX on Wednesday, Probably a bit of a bargin to be had for somebody if I can get between dealer px price and a hold out private sale price.

Just noticed your comment about the Turbos, Mine has had both replaced 4 weeks ago and yes your right cost was best part of 6K with new head gasket and associated hoses that are all done at the same time.

6k for turbos ??? Shocked Where is the majority of cost in doing it? Is it an engine out job or something. V8 or else ...

If your turbos go south it,s a body off deal, believe it or not but this is the dealers recommended procedure it's faster and causes less damage Shocked That where most of the 6K goes please feel free to jump in and correct me but that's the information I got from a dealer Big Cry

Even still. I guess I must be old school, but designing something that's six grand bill for a turbo is poor design. To me, turbo s are wear and tear parts... maybe longer term wear, but still an item that is more likely to need replaced. At that price I think ill ditch ideas for a tdv8 and look atty a td6 personally.

Our just keep the v8

It's only where turbos are abused that they die, look at the countless ones on lorries and train locos that last many many years without issues and an often outlast the engines, same is true of cars, a few I have owned have eaten turbos when I abused them but others just carry on. XUD engines are well known for this, turbo failure is very rre and when it happens is down to abused servicing history in its life...

Firstly my car has a full service history and always only fitted with OEM parts, even for the latest repair I knew I was upgrading and could have save some money having copy parts fitted but still went for RR parts.

Wouldnt agree its been abused either, the car is for driving and in fact driving in very harsh conditions, mine like many RR have done nothing other than normal road driving.

And yes it was the engine completly out, I wish I have taken some photos as almost the complete front of the car was gone, it was quite a sight !

For the 6K it soon builds up, I guess engine in and out there is somthing like 20 - 30 hours labour and the parts are best part of a couple of thou each.

This has not put me off RR brand as I am informed the new car under new owners and investiment is a better car and my 2012 is ready for pick up this Friday although after that bill I am pleased I have a full warrenty.

The TDV8 has TWO turbos and I decided to have both replaced while the engine was out !

Even with this all said I will still be going for a TDV8 just going to look out for a decent warranty to cover the turbos as said elsewhere turbos can and do go on for years but it's like anything mechanical eventually is gonna break, tis the nature of the beast
