Hi I have just joined this site as I am looking to buy a Range in the next couple of months, my question is do I go for a TD6 or the TDV8 any pit falls what should I be looking out for anything that will help in not buying a lemon would be appreciated many thanks in advance

Depends on your budget. The TDV8 is widely felt to be a better car, and has the new interior. It is however markedly more costly to buy at the moment.

I'd say if you you can afford the TDV8, go for one. Graham

Well th TDV8 has always been my choice but I thought I would ask for advice, always looked at it this way a big car takes a lot of energy to get going so a smaller engine has to work that much harder to do so, I had a2.9 Scorpio some years ago which returned better fuel than a friends 2.3 for just that reason

Plenty of people have the TD6 with a remap. Transforms the engine and hence driving experience, for a few hundred quid. Graham

I don't doubt that are there any things I should be looking for tale tale signs that there is likely to be a problem, I have heard horror story's of turbos packing up at a cost of £6000 to repair?

I've got a TD6, it is underpowered, the TDV8 is a far better car, it is also however upto 50% more expensive.

The main issue with TD6s is the gear box, which could be a big bill if it goes, you can get a refurb box. I've had the 'sealed for life' oil changed on mine, which i think is sensible maintainance.

The engines however, touch wood seam to be fairly solid if well looked after, but surley with a ~20k car your going to look after it??!! __________________

To answer your question, I'd say if your budget will stretch to a TDV8, especially an 07, go for it, then you'll get the interior facelift too.

At £25k it would have to be a TDV8, at £15K it would have to be a TD6, at £20k you'll be lucky to get a good TDV8, so it depends on how much you want to spend, and also other priorities.

As above, the TD6 does suffer gearbox gremlins, and the TDV8 has an overall better gearbox, plus i prefer the facelift, however for the money the TD6 is a fantastic car, basically you get what you pay for. I believe both can be remapped to very good effect.

To steer clear of a lemon, buy on condition, not mileage, go for the best car you can, and I'd say most importantly, but it from somebody you can trust, and trust your instinct with regard to sellers. Some forum members have had poor experience with some main dealers, however you can trust Lookers 100%, as you can Gary Elliott, since they are forum members, and work hard to maintain their good reputation in the fullfat community!  Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Hi Hemiuk I have just sold my Td6 and bought a TDv8 when I first bought my Td6 it's was amazing and thought how could Landrover build any thing better,well I think they have if you can afford a TDv8 go for it,I doubt you will regret it😉

As above go for the TDV8 but dont just buy as new as you can, buy the BEST that you can even if a high miler and if buying from a dealer of any type make sure you get the best warranty with it possible.

If you buy private getting one under 90k miles will mean a warranty is easy to come by and with the money saved over going thru a dealer a warranty can be bought and tax paid for for a year as well
