It's not the spare, took that out when it needed a new suspension compressor 2 weeks ago It sounds to everyone who's been in it like the left front suspension which is almost all new

So far done . . .

rear top & bottom hub bushes

both anti roll bar drop links

left suspension strut

left suspension arm (the one with the sensor attached)

left rear trailing arm & bush

2 new rear wheels complete with tires

suspension pump

removed the battery & checked under it for anything loose

removed both front wheel arch covers

been round all the suspension with a crow bar on a ramp at three separate garages including a main dealer

I've been working on cars for over 20 years & never come across a problem that can't be fixed like this, complete mystery to me.

I suggested ARB bushes earlier but having looked at Rave I see they are not actually replaceable - they are bonded to the ARB and are not listed as a separate part !

although the armoured RR version seems like it has seperate bushes available which I thought was odd. V8 or else ...

Yes the ARB bushes could cause this noise as the force transmitted from the drop links would make noise that sounded multiple times with one strike, seems logical? Only problem is how can they be replaced? Would the engine need to be dropped with the sub-frame or can it be threaded through the wheel arch, seems as though a few of us have this noise so it may be worth a try. . . . . Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

But as mentioned, they are not replaceable unless you have the armoured version. You would have to buy a new ARB. Rave says drop the sub frame to replace the ARB.

As mentioned above, removing a drop link should confirm or eliminate the ARB. Definately worth a shot before spending money or serious time removing the sub frame.

(Still think it is the rack).

Oh Have a good Christmas David  Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

This is a really long shot but I had a similar problem and it turned out that one of the plastic clips on the headlight had snapped so the light was slightly loose and it made a loud knocking noise which was probably amplified by the wing. I was convinced it was coming from the suspension. Give the headlight a good shake and see what happens.

I love this type of suggestion, will now be feeling upbeat and optimistic all day until I can get out and have a look at the headlight later this evening.

You know, I think I have seen a slight shake in the headlamp beam over rough roads, had put it down to some looseness in the leveling, beam bending gizmos.

Fingers crossed, will update later.

On a related note does anyone know where I can get a scissor type balljoint splinter that is wide enough to fit? I don't like the fork type as they do too much damage but dont want to pay for the Land Rover genuine tool.

Can't help I'm afraid.

Since I was changing the joints I accepted that the old ones would be scrapped and used a fork type.

Just had a look at mine. I did remove the light to replace the washer motor, it's all solid. As mine only started after fitting a Dunlop air strut I'm thinking of replacing it with a Delphi one. No doubt the other side will go soon and if the knock is still there I can keep it for a spare

I used a fork type ball joint splitter & had no problems getting it off, shouldn't damage anything if your careful. Cost about £5 from Machine Mart Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

Don't forget, mine has had a new pair of Delphi struts and still knocks.

Plan to try removing one drop link tonight, and have a good look at the headlight.

Have also booked it into my local indy for a bit of a poke around early next week.
