random AIR SUSP INACTIVE fault light, can anyone help?

Hi all,

randomly every now and again i get the AIR SUSP INACTIVE fault com up on my dash, and the HDC INACTIVE fault comes up with it too. Sometimes when i pull off my drive and go 50 feet up the road it goes away, sometimes it doesnt come on at all, sometimes it comes on after 10 mins of driving etc etc, you get the idea!!!

the air suspension works fine, goes up and down now problem when this light isnt on, but it goes down and locks in position as long as this light is on, take the keys out and shut the door and it goes back up to normal height.

it also comes with 3 orange lights on the dash, the abs one, the one to the left of this, and the orange triangle one in the middle of the dash with the anti clockwise arrow going round it.

does anyone know what this all is? if it was an actual fault that needed fixing i'd take it to LR but dont want to give them £95 + vat just to take a look.

i spoke to LR today and they said it could be the compressor (which it isnt) or a sensor "in the middle of the car" and the part would cost £42 to supply, who knows what this sensor is? he was just about to tell me where it was and what to do, but seemed to change his mind and said bring it in for a look!!

is it a sensor somewhere getting stuck? or shorting out?, any help would be much appreciated.

its a 2004 04 vogue td6

cheers

Austin

If you use the search facility you will find this has been discussed before. People love to suggest it is the battery because this can cause various electrical glitches, but there are numerous reasons why this fault happens and personally I don't think the battery is the most likely.

The air suspension system takes inputs from a number of sensors around the vehicle including the steering angle sensor and the abs wheel speed sensors. It uses these and doubtless others to ensure that height changes only happen under safe driving conditions. If any of the sensors are a bit dodgy then you may get plausibility errors, where the ECU works out that a given combination of sensor values are not plausible. It is this circumstance that causes the air suspension to be disabled for safety reasons.

The first step is to get the fault codes read from the vehicle. This will help you understand where the fault might be. You may have to have them cleared, then generate the error, then re-read them again. I'd happily do it for you but I am in Surrey and you are perhaps a bit far away.

thanks for th ideas guys, and thanks for the kind offer Rich, i think you are a bit far away from me.

my battery looks to be a pretty me LR item, might be worth disconnecting then reconnecting then?

But one thing i have been obsessed with latley is the suspension being level!! on my drive (which has a tiny gradiant to it) it looks like the OSR corner is lower than the rest of it!! but then when i park in a multi story or on a flat car park it sits level. is my mind playing tricks on me? why would it do this only on my drive!!

Does sound like the situation you get after disconnecting the battery. Try the lock to lock trick after starting up but before moving off. Does this clear the lights and the fault? This action resets the steering angle sensor.

As ric355 says it could be a wide range of things causing the fault but getting the faults read is probably the next stage, even though it does point to battery (for me). If battery is old may well be worth replacing before the winter anyway.

Disconnecting the battery may no clear these faults, but it is worth a try.

Read up on forum how to disconnect and reconnect battery for best outcomes.

Regarding the air suspension, the car will not level out side to side if on a gradient (unless you are in Off Road Height).

Best way to check if you have a problem is to measure from bottom of wing to wheel arch both sides and see if there is much difference both on the flat and on your drive and check again several hours later. You may have an airbag leak if it has reduced in height, or your suspension may need re-calibrating. .

Gonna check out my battery tomorrow, hopefully that'll be it!! Total numbers of faults that all come on together are, air susp inactive, hdc inactive, abs light in Amber, brake light in amber, and finally the dsc light in Amber!!

Also the osr side is 25mm lower than the nsr, when parked ony drive!!!

a question i will have to raise. They say they specialise in 4x4 wheel alignment with 14point laser alignment of all 4 wheels.

Specialising in 4x4 doesn't mean they are FFRR competent.....be warned Whistle

@ engineer - This happended on my 2004 V8. It appears to be either the ABS sensor (front left) or maybe in your case the wheel position sensor thingy. Check all the wiring in the arches isn't cathing stg/worn. The reason all these lights come on at the same time is that they are all linked via the ABS module. check inside that to ensure no corrosion which could be impeding the contacts/signals. it's a 20 second job to look inside the connector unit.

will do, thanks. I think its probably likely that one of the abs sensors has been damaged when i was hammering around there doing the track rod ends
