Possible leak from top of windscreen or sunroof?

Hey folks, First let me say that it seems like the sunroof drains are working. I poured water through them to check they drained to the ground, which seemed okay.

It seems like I’m getting a leak from the top of my windscreen during heavy rains. The headliner is getting wet around the sunglasses pocket and then its dripping down onto the center console. I can see some small water droplets on the inside of the glass where the glue attaches the glass to the body. Not ideal.
I called a glass shop today and they suggested the only way to fit it is to remove the windshield, and yada yada yada “the glass might break”.
Anyways, I’d like to try to fix this myself. I ordered some CRL windshield and body sealer (doesn’t dry and is rubber based not silicone). I was thinking to put this stuff into the windshield upper trim cavity, but I can’t get it out. Is it removable? (LR029533 molding)

The sunroof drains are draining. I poured water through them to check they drained to the ground, which seemed okay. If there is a leak from the drain line somewhere between the sunroof cavity and the ground how would I go about tracing it? Remove the headliner? Remove A-pillar trim? Any common spots?

My suspect leak location

Water is pooling here on the head liner fabric and dripping down

Hi,
I would say this is more likely to be overflow from the front of the sunroof tray.
Have you checked your drain tubes are fully clear?
It may just be backing up during heavy rain. 2012 TDV8 4.4 Westminster Santorini black

And FYI that trim you have arrowed will have been damaged when they changed a screen previously, then the fitters glue that trim in so it doesn't fall out...

My early one had a similar leak and it turned out to be badly a fitted screen and the seal along the top was only a few mm. The screen had parted company....

You could remove the screen yourself, you need a long handled stiffish, very sharp, knife and work your way around the edge, it takes a while and you will need help lifting it, then clean all the glue off the body and screen until there is just a few mm left, then refit, loads of videos on youtube ....

But before you do all that check the sunroof drains as Baz says, it's the easiest , cheapest and quickest to check.... Thumbs Up Pete

I did a sunroof drain test last week, but I'll do a more intensive one this week. I'll do a leak test on the windshield as well. 2006 Range Rover 4.4L Gas

Looks like mine a few months ago…i tracked mine down to the front left sunroof drain being partially blocked.
Used a 500ml syringe with some tubing which conveniently fit into the drain holes and pushed through some warm soapy water. After 3 syringes full….the drain was free flowing

Update: I did a test with the garden hose and the leak is indeed from the windshield. Photos show where water has dripped from seal onto headliner. You can also see how water dripped down onto the right side of the center console in one photo.
Sunroof drains are no problem- I flowed water through them for five minutes continuously with no detectable leaks inside the vehicle.
I also taped the windshield upper seal closed (see photo) and then it poured rain hard for six hours this morning and there were no leak, so the sunroof drains are definitely working.
I will be trying to put some CRLawrence body and window sealant into the gap between the body and the upper windshield seal whenever it stops raining. Hopefully that will solve the issue.

If that doesn't work a new seal is not a lot of money, you then rip the old one out, sort out the leak and replace the seal, or get a windscreen replacement company to do it, they will have done it lots on all different cars... Thumbs Up Pete

I have put one along the top edge of mine as I was getting wind noise at higher speeds. Did the trick for me and it looks factory, i.e. its not noticeable unless you know its there 2007 TDV8 VSE

There should be a continuous bead of sealant all the way round the screen, which is what stops the water. The rubber is just a finisher really.

See if you can find a local windscreen fitter, who can remove the screen and reseal it for you. Failing that a good “stone chip” in the drivers field of view and a new screen off insurance…..🤷‍♂️ There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I called a local glass shop here in Vancouver a week ago and they told me that they could take the windshield out and re-install it, but "...if it breaks when we take it out YOU have to pay for it, and sometimes they break...oh, and those windshields are special order from the UK only, 6 months to get one" This is a pretty typical response from a Canadian tradesman. The translation is, of course, that they don't want to touch this job. I'm pretty used to this- tough to get good help around here, so I do most everything myself. Not sure if my work really qualifies as "good or help", but at least I'm cheap and I know who to blame! Hahaha.

I filled the gap between the body and the seal with goo this afternoon. Some decent rain in the forecast for later in the week, so we'll see how it holds up. This stuff is like road repair tar, so I imagine it'll do a good job of keeping the water out, but who knows, water finds a way. It was pretty messy and I overfilled the space a bit so that when I pressed on the window seal rubber some goo smooshed out and I had to wipe it up, which was a pain. I figure more goo equals a better seal though. This goo stuff doesn't harden so the window could still be removed at some point in the future if necessary (it'll be a real mess though). If this doesn't work I'll start tailgating lories in the hopes of having a rock fly up and give me a good crack for an insurance replacement.

Good suggestion. That would probably work great. I'll bookmark that just in case my fix doesn't work. 2006 Range Rover 4.4L Gas

This fix seems to be a success. We’ve been getting pummelled with rain for the last few days and the headliner is dry as a bone. My spare tire well had about a centimetre of water in it though, so that’s the next thing to fix. 2006 Range Rover 4.4L Gas
