TDV8 Aux belts and Tensioners

Hi All,

I can’t pretend money isn’t tight but that doesn’t stop me pampering my cars and servicing them far more frequently than recomended. They always get whatever they need but now money is tight I do research and try and avoid needless waste!

I have belt squeal when the car is cold and it’s the only issue with the car and the only thing that doesn’t work exactly as designed. The belt appears in perfect condition and runs dead true.

I know it could be one small idler but a large chunk of my cash is going to go on the removal of things like the fan in order to access the idlers, pulleys and belts.

Maltings sell a complete set of genuine LR parts inc both belts for £500. They also sell a complete set of patter parts for just under half of this.

Are non original parts from a reputable seller of a similar quality and worth using or are the genuine parts of a much better quality?

Can anyone recommend what they have previously used and have been happy with?

My starter motor, alternator and air con pump all work as expected, is it really work replacing these?

My coolant is clear, fresh and has always been changed on time or early, is it worth replacing these water pump?

As an aside what rust preventative have you used and would recommend? The car is extremely clean underneath and that’s how I want it to remain.

Thanks 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Does it squeal all the time or just for a few mins after a cold start? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I replaced all mine along with a new waterpump and an alternator while it was all apart. All Genuine. It started to squeak only a few months later when the weather was cold.
Maltings sent me a pattern tensioner by mistake then sent a genuine one. The quality was night and day. The pattern one was rough with play in the bearing. Thumbs Up

Like Kevinp, I renewed the pulleys and tensioner with genuine, a Denso alternator was also installed at the same time. I didn't think to do the waterpump at the time, maybe I should have but the RR had only done 58K miles so should be fine.

It only squeals for a few minutes after starting, once warmed up it runs silent. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Genuine LR belts and tensioners £496
Denso Alternator £270
Genuine LR water pump £140
Nissans air con condenser £320

£1230 plus whatever the labour charge would be from a decent specialist. If I assume £500 labour it would seem a false economy to save £300 on pattern tensioners and pulleys! 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

It can go on for years like that and could just be the tensioner weakening or some oil or antifreeze contamination on the belt. Also replace the AC compressor as well as the alternator and water pump as these are prone to failure. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I should have typed air con pump not condenser.

If the belt broke would I lose cooling? 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

I’ve never heard of one breaking. The pulleys and tensioners will give you more noise than a few mins at cold start and the state of the tensioner is observable by how the belt is running on it. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Thanks, I will keep an eye on it for now as everything works and it goes silent after a few minutes.

Thanks for all the replies, A big part of me keeping this car is this forum. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Santorini black ivory leather

Mine is a bit 'chirpy' for a few mins now the mornings are cold due to condensation and rubber loosing compliance and grip at lower temps esp as the smallest pulley is the alternator which will also have the highest load first thing. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
