mine is almost gone.. Is there any after market parts for this? Does it really support the tank or is it only holding the tabs in the same bolt holes? Seeing how bad the original one is I'm kinda tempted to weld som alu sheets. If it's really supporting the tank and need the shapes that will be harder to replicate..

No one is making them aftermarket for the 405, they do for the Evoke so I guess they will come at some point...

They are a very specific shape to fit around the tank, propshaft, exhaust etc so I don't think you could make one easily..

They use the same fixings as the tank but the tank can't fall out if the guard slowly rots away, the only issue is an unprotected fuel tank but it is quite high and you would have to do some extreme off roading to damage it... Thumbs Up Pete

mine is a 2005, it has a plastic cover under the fuel tank,
i tried desperately to get it off, had it on a hoist
i think the only way to remove it is to remove the rear suspension
hope yours is different RR 2005 4.4 petrol

But if it's only for protection can't we fab a flat plate that goes under the prop shaft or is it for the heat of exhaust also? If it doesn't need to hold the tank, only protect it then it doesn't sound impossible to make something. I really don't think a new steel one will solve anything :/

As I said, unless you do some pretty severe off roading you don't need one...

I have OCD and it has to be right, hence the freshly galvanised one which will go on soon and outlive the car.......

Knares, the 322 is totally different to the 405... Thumbs Up Pete

My old evoque had its tray rust completely away ... but it also had a couple of metal straps that cuddled it.

Whilst I dont have OCD to Pete's extent, I still think I would feel happier if there were some sort of support holding it underneath. Even if it were just straps or similar.

The annoying is so many things hang off the tank tray too, like the sill protectors and heatshields. V8 or else ...

I'm using mine around the farm but not intense offroad.. Branches and stuff can be hit though so I would like some protection for the plastic. Guess I'll have a closer look next time I have it on the lift if something can be done.

Just thinking out the box

Pete has got a perfect mould, is making a fibreglass replacement an option ?.
I know it wouldn’t give any heat protection from exhaust to tank, but neither does the rusty existing rubbish.

The fuel tanks are very thick tough plastic, designed not to split and rupture even when partially crushed in an accident, If you put a hole in it off roading a leak of fuel will be a long way down your list of damaged items to repair....

Either change it or just forget about it.... Thumbs Up Pete

I can weld me up one from alu plates for like 20% of the part cost so it's not tempting to spend that much for a temp solution that will rust again. Really weird that the engine guards use alu and this is made of thin steel.

Hi Minim.
Are you planning to replicate the original shape or will it have more square corners?
I would imagine that the compound curves would be difficult to fabricate but an alloy plate the same thickness as the others sounds good. Even if it is functional rather than an exact copy.
Please keep us informed of your progress. Lots of us out there with rusty tank guards looking for a solution.
Cheers
Pete

It would be plates with square corners for pure function. Also to look a tad better then the rusty original ones. I hate to drive around knowing they look this bad but I can't justify spending this much on the OEM temp solution that will rust again. Idkn how it's in your country but here they use salt on the roads from September to April so the steel on cars take a serious hit.
