How to switch off the "Adaptive" part of Cruise

Overall I'm loving my 5.0AB but I just cant get on with the Adaptive Cruise despite trying to adjust to it over the last 5000miles. What I want to do is go back to the old fashioned basic Cruise Control. Is that possible? Can I switch off the radar and leave cruise working? I've got an IID tool but cant see it as an option. I'd be happy to pay a dealer to do it if that's the only way its possible. Anyone know??

The issue is that IMO adaptive cruise is the very worst of "driver aids". I set a target speed, but with busy motorways you are always approaching someone else. With the old CC you'd cruise up behind, pick your slot in the overtaking lane and move smoothly by. If there was no slot available then a touch of break would regain control of the car until safe to resume. With adaptive, the car slows down so often that you don't necessarily realise that although you set the thing to 70 (or whatever) you are actually doing 65 because that's what the bloke in front wants to do. If you hog the overtaking lane then the system works as you can only go as fast as the slowest in that lane....but if you drive properly only using the overtaking lanes to overtake then the adaption is actually dangerous. Approaching the back of traffic in the left lane, the car will dramatically slow at some variable random point, often just as I decide to move into the overtaking lane. It then takes a few seconds to pick up again by which time I've messed up some faster drivers day. The range of the radar varies from so far away its a joke to just far enough away for anyone else to push in front. On the other hand the shortest setting is hopeless if there is a big speed differential as you rapidly approach the back of someone and the car applies the brakes very hard very late on. Its completely unnerving and hopeless! Instead of the car basically driving itself as I was used to, I now have to work harder with Cruise on than when its off. Mike - MPx

try this, while cruise is on, hold the reduce distance button to the lowest level and keep pressed, it will turn off the adaptive part of the cruise control. ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan!
Adaptive CC can be totally disabled by removing the fuse for the radar unit then changing several CCF parameters using your IIDtool, having only recently retro-fitted ACC to my MY12 TDV8. However Stan's suggestion would be preferable although ACC might be restored on next start-up. I'm going to try Stan's suggestion as sometimes I would prefer mine's original, standard CC.

Good info Stan. Thumbs Up

Does it work the other way? Can I switch it on by pressing the up button for a longer time. I use the adaptive on speed controlled sections of motorways. Very useful. Set to 55 and relax. The traffic goes in waves so don't have to make any adjustments Thumbs Up

I agree with MPx that on normal motorways regular cruise control would be better. 2012 5.0L S/C

Absolutely love my ACC - one of the reasons I got the AB. When I need to overtake on motorway I just accelerate as normal, set new ACC speed. If I do find myself slowing down by someone going slower, I just enjoy following on and then overtake later when I can. Really love the ACC, wouldn't want to be without it. I'm totally with RosytanH on this one. I could not imagine owning an RR without adaptive cruise. Best feature on the car but you do need to add a bit of pedal sometimes to make up the slack in the system.

It doesn't work on my vehicle. However I did get to read the manual to discover that forward alert has to be enabled in the service menu for forward alert to be active, which I want in case it helps avoid clashes with the skippies in my area. Spotted a big one just off the other side of the road tonight whilst doing 100 kph, heading further off rather than out in front.

Sadly doesn't work with my one either. Sad If I keep the "- distance" tab pulled once its on just one < then after about 5 seconds the picture of the car goes off on the dash....but it hasn't switched off the radar. Its just as adaptive as ever.

Grateful for any other ideas....???? Mike - MPx

I asked a dealer in the context of a 2016 405 whether one could select 'ordinary' CC and was told yes, by double clicking the selector switch. I don't know if that is right or if yes, if it works in the 322 also, but it might be worth a try. Only Range Rovers since 1988

To disable ACC in the CCF with an IIDtool you will need to have full CCF access using the latest beta version s/w, achieved by requesting full access from Gap Diagnostics. The parameters to be changed are:
Speed control – adaptive fitted
Standard speed control display type – Adaptive speed control full display plus priority messages
Speed control – ACC
Adaptive speed control indication in instrument cluster – enabled

The fuse for the radar unit in the engine bay fuse panel has to be removed to stop it sending unexpected data. My 4.4 only has 1 radar unit whereas it appears that the 5.0 has a 2nd so might have a 2nd fuse. The 5.0 has a distinct ACC ecu located in the right rear panel whereas the 4.4's ACC is handled by the ecm so a 5.0's rear panel fuse may also need to be removed or the ACC ecu unplugged.

Ooooerr Graeme that sounds properly scary to get right! But many thanks for the info. Some Qs:

Defuse the radar(s) first or after the ECU changes?
Intuitively the settings you list look like they are switching adaptive on rather than off. So would I be selecting things like
Speed Control - Adaptive NOT fitted...etc?

Meanwhile will try the CS approach... Mike - MPx
