The steering wheel raise & lower function on my 09 L322 is acting weird. When I turn off the ignition the wheel raises for easier access but when I turn it back on again sometimes it doesn't come back down to the pre set position and I have to lower it with the lever, but then sometimes it does, totally random as to when it does!

Also sometimes when I get out with the engine still running, to open an access gate for instance, when I get back in the steering wheel has lowered to the lowest position all on its own!

Every time either of these things have occurred I always put the wheel to the correct position for driving and then reset the 3 memory buttons but the intermittent problem still occurs.

Any ideas if this can be cured easily would be very welcome, not been able to find any previous cases of this on this brilliant forum!

Can you get the diag codes read? Might be handy.

I don't have an iidtool, I guess that's what's needed to read codes? I was thinking of getting the iCarsoft tool as recommended by another member - I assume that could read fault codes? Cannot justify the cost of the iidtool as it's far too capable a tool for my use!

Yes, the iCarsoft tool can read and reset codes, also show live data. Unlike the IID tool it can't tweak settings, and other tools can get data into graphs and stuff. I have an iCarsoft and for the money it's good.

Thanks for that Mr Spock, so wth the iCarsoft tool I could reset the service reminder date for instance? If so, can I just delete the reminder or would I be able to enter a different code? Excuse my ignorance but this is all new to me!

No, the service reminder doesn't seem to be a fault code. However, that can be cleared anyway without a tool. It's in the wiki on this site:

You might see codes relating to your column position potentiometer, that sort of thing, which may help diagnose the issue.

Have you saved your seat/steering preference to all three memory positions? I wonder if you are actually having problems with the memory buttons maybe.

You're welcome to head round the M25 to Hertfordshire and I'll read your codes (I'm quite enjoying this FFRR debuggind thing!)

Ian, that appears to be for models 02 - 05? Will it work for my 09?

I don't think it will work post 2005 or 2006. Google suggests this may work:

• To reset the service light (just the oil service light - you can't reset the inspection light)
  
• Hold the left button on the panel, turn the ignition on to position 2
  
• Keep holding, SERVICE will flash, then appear steady
  
• Depending how you press and hold after that, you can either reset it by distance (DISTANCE comes up steady on the display), or date (the current date will appear)
  
• Press until END appears, then turn the ignition off and back on - the new distance to oil service will appear if set by distance

Had a go at this yesterday evening Ian and managed to get a message about oil service but the one I wanted to clear was the service reminder and as you say, it's not possible to do that, so I guess I'll just have to put up with it telling me every time I turn on!

As a consequence of sitting in the car trying all this and also trying to get to the bottom of the steering wheel issue I ended up with a battery without enough power to start up! The current one is probably about 6 years old, I had it on my previous car for a about 2 - 3 years at least and then swapped it the the RR when I got it 3 years ago so I've ordered a new one as it was beginning to turn over a bit slower lately so better to be sure I reckon

Been considering getting an iiD tool, has anyone bought one and found they hardly ever use it (so wasn't worth spending the money on one) or do the positives far outweigh any such thoughts? Be interested to hear feedback

Im not sure an iid tool will help with the problem apart from enabling you to turn off the tilt function. I had this issue around 6-7yrs ago on my '56 RR VSE . The steering column lifted ok when the engine was turned off, but when I turned it on, the wheel just kept going down until it hit my legs. I had it fixed under warranty and I think it was the module that controls the wheel and seats was either replaced or the potentiometer in the steering wheel was recalibrated. Can't remember exactly which (unless I posted it on this forum of course!). Whatever they did, it never happened again. Steve

You can only reset the later cars service lights with a diagnostic tool....

There will be no "easy fix" for your problem, as RRVSE has said it will be an issue with either the column itself or the memory module, a diagnostic tool may tell you which but something has broken..... Pete

Peejay, turn off the function in the dash???

Your issue will be either the column or the seat ECU but either way it will be very expensive to fix and unless your a fat American The feature doesn’t get used much in the UK
