Thumping underneath

Hi there
Hope some one can point me in the right direction?

As the heading says,
I am getting a very big thumping coming from underneath, under the centre of the car. It seem to happen when I pull away from a standing start if i give it a foot full or uphill.

I was doing down the line of the prop shaft bearing, but i cant see any play in the bearing if i try and move the prop shaft up and down. I don't really want to start throwing parts at it (£400 for a prop) if its not that.

It seems to only happen when I pull away under real power or when the car loads the rear axle. If i drive like miss Daisey, then nothing. This a real heavy thump thump thump as the car moves off, but then as soon as i back off the throttle it stops.

All your help greatly appreciated Bow down

Hi Eastsoutheast

It seems to do in Hi, it sound like a rotating thump, like something banging the underneath of the car body.
I have looked at the prop bearing and all seems to be ok.
I was thinking it might be the axal housing bushing or the subframe. But I can see any movement. I have even looked at the exhaust and nothing seems out of place or to close to anything.

This is becoming a real head scratcher L322 TDV8 2011 Autobiography

The centre bearing itself doesn't seem to be the reason for changing the bearing, instead the rubber mount for the centre bearing deteriorates allowing the prop-shaft to flop about. Have another check of the rubber bushing around the bearing.

Hi mate

I will have another look, but i have tried moving it and it doesn't seem to have any play.
Well its in for some body repair at the moment, (Tesco's car park prang) but i will have to get underneath it when i get her back. I also have other job i need to get done.

Thanks L322 TDV8 2011 Autobiography

Check all 4 tyres tread depth. When I bought mine some plonker had fitted winters on the rear with 11mm tread left and summers on the front with 4mm. This was causing the Transfer box to have a hard time of it whenever I was moving relatively slowly (less than 50mph) and giving it some throttle. Up hill and accelerating at ~30mph would result in a bang bang bang from the transfer case. Felt like driving over a cattle grid to some extent. Cruising down the motorway it wouldn't make the noise. 4 new tyres fitted and all was resolved. Thankfully no lasting damage to the transfer box as far as I can tell.

Hi Willeywilson

Just an update, Dont know if its related but:-
This morning driving to work, got half way (15 miles) and no drive. Came up with "GEARBOX FAULT" like the car is in neutral.
Let it cool down start it and put it into drive, and its like the clutch is slipping. Gear selector jammed in drive. So dont know if its going to be the transfer box or gear box, Codes show "speed sensor on input shaft algorithm" or something like that. Sorry didnt screen shot it, but will tonight when i get back home.
All this just before xmas, still RAC picked her up and got into work by my sons Jag.

Looks like i have some research to do, then out with the spanners oh and then the wallet Big Cry

I will keep you updated.
All the best L322 TDV8 2011 Autobiography

Hi mate

Yeah finds out its the front diff, plus the n/s/f drive shaft has popped out and has destroyed the splines in the diff and shaft.

So now looking for a new diff and drive shaft. Drive shaft not to bad £43+vat, But for a new diff for a 4.4 TDV8 £2,000.00+ vat and fitting.

So its off the road until i can get her done. L322 TDV8 2011 Autobiography
