Alternator not charging

Hi its been a few years since I last had an L322 and I'm concerned I've made an error here!
The issue is with my recently purchased 4.2 L322
Battery light came on about 3 hours into a lengthy drive.
Managed to get it to a mates places. Battery voltage measured 12.7v engine off, dropped to 12.3 with engine running, so alternator is not charging.
Car is at the sparkies, alternator looks lnew (seller said it had been recently swapped out) and is bench testing fine, he is concerned it could be an engine ECU issue, which sounds expensive.
Any ideas what is going on here

Check your earth connections are ok can’t remember if it’s the 322 or 405 but one has a earth strap behind a front wheel liner that corrodes. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

So, it’s been checked over, earths were all good (thanks for the heads up), put back together and is working.
The alternator is a genuine item and looks to be in near new condition.

Concerns both my sparky and I that no actual fault has been found or fixed so feels like it may well happen again, thought being a dodgy connection somewhere. Autosparky is going to drive it around a bit and see if it breaks again.

I bought a cigarette lighter volt meter and keep it plugged in. Really handy to just look down and check what the voltage is. Wink. Something like the below.

I had alternator issues on my old P38a so Made sure when I got my L322 that was the first thing I bought.

So, to close this one off, after a fair bit of investigation the new alternator was identified as being suspect.
It was a pattern part, so replaced it with a genuine item. drove 600km home today with no charging issues at all.

I ordered one a few days ago ( using Amazon ) and it arrived this morning, I plugged it in and my reading is only 12v, should I be worried, the car starts ok on the button MY11 (does not need a key) its push start !

12v is nothing to worry about. You can also monitor it via the secret touchscreen menu. The battery monitoring system is pretty sophisticated and will tell you if anything is wrong with the charging system. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Mine reads 12v until you start the engine. It then goes to 14.6 or 14.7v depending on how long since last driven

Thought we only had that in France...had my alternator replaced 4 weeks ago 600 euro and same problem. New one was not up to it's job. Seems that garages are all the same, they put in some sh...y new part that cost them small money and the "patient" wont check. If it works it's fine and they make good money. If it doesn't work they will discuss and tell you it's not their fault, some wiring problem, or what ever. Took some "convincing" but they replaced it with decent one. Now it's fine
