What’s making the whooshing sound?

My MY17 SDV8 is making a slight “whooshing” sound between 1300-1900 rpm. Particularly noticeable on a trailing throttle. Happens in any gear, including neutral and when stationary. The SDV8 spends most of its running time between 1500-2000 rpm, so it’s really annoying.

No fault codes and all tests have been positive.

It didn’t help that the travelling LR master technician listened to it and said “they all do that”. They certainly don’t all do that and mine didn’t used to either. But annoyingly that set the clock back by several weeks. I had to go out, again, with a senior technician and separately the service manager in my FFRR and another 2017 SDV8 FFRR, to hammer that home.

Currently it’s a case of replacing parts. A new high pressure fuel pump didn’t fix it, so it’s awaiting new turbos, but now it’s in “lockdown” at the dealership.

To be fair to them the dealership have been pretty good about it and I was given a 500 mile £80k D5 as a loaner. I’ve clocked up close to 5k miles in that so far and it’s a reminder as to why I didn’t buy one after having had six Disco’s from 2006-16

i havnt heard of any one else having this problem..

first thing i would do is to check all the pipework and see if the manifold has any cracks.....

it might also be useful to browse the L322 sections as they have a similar engine.. ... - .- -.

Thank you Stan. The dealership have completed various tests and the SDV8 has numerous sensors. Bit of a mystery!

Update:

So far Stratstones have replaced:

High pressure fuel pump

ACE Pump

Water pump

Alternator

Both turbos

All pulleys and belts

A smoke and pressure test has been carried out, twice!

They are about to change the oil pump.

Despite the above, it still makes a droning/whooshing sound, most noticeably at c. 1,400 rpm at low speed or in neutral. So it happens when stationary.

Here's a video, I stop and select neutral at 30 secs in.

&feature=youtu.be

Any ideas?

Yes that's it. Ok, what about gearbox oil level? Guessing it could be torque converter noise?

Not something simple like the viscous fan stuck or blade broken/bent?

Good question and I can't answer it.

However, the noise happens when stationary and in neutral as well as when in motion.

The problem started back in Feb. when it was still less than 3 years old and 27k miles. It's been at the dealers every since.

I was given a D5 HSE Luxury as a "loaner". Still have it some 12.5 k miles later. Sad

I’m not sure if related, but... our 4.4 TDV8 makes an prominent ‘sucking’ noise. I first noticed it whilst reversing with the windows down last year. At first I thought it was drive-train related as I couldn’t recognise such an odd sound. But, even when stationary she makes this ‘whooshing’ or ‘inhaling’ sound when revving at about 1300 or more RPM. It comes from the drivers side front wing, from the upper air intake grate, the black one just as you open the bonnet. It almost sounds like it wants more air. No fault codes in the IID.

I know in the L405 they have the QE2 style ‘stacks’ through which the air is drawn in. But, could it be a similar thing?

I’ve not idea if the L322 should do this? Runs fine. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

Yep. Mine does that....

Not helpful I know, not figured it out.

Mine is closer to 1050-1100 rpm but the noise is similar.

Comes with a slight resonance in the steering wheel.

It’s not something obvious, I’ve set the RPM at 1100 and had a good listen in the engine bay, I can’t pin it down. It’s not the viscous fan, or the HP pump. Could be vac related but that needs more listening at. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Very interesting as there was a very and I mean very slight vibration through the steering wheel. I actually never detected it, but one of the technicians I went out with did. When pointed out I could just feel it.

That vibration has now gone, at least for the time being. The noise hasn’t.

It’s running very well. No detriment at all.

Interesting.

The plot thickens.

Mine also is running well. Mine seems slightly less noticeable over the last couple of weeks. Was worst and most evident when I was in traffic on holiday.

Managed to set the revs at its most noticeable point inside with a clamp and have a scout under the bonnet. Really couldn’t hear anything which was loud or overly noticeable, except for the HP fuel pump was a little louder than I expected, the only corresponding noise I could detect from the outside Was at the front end of the drivers side bank, but nothing major. I’m going to have another listen at the weekend with some probing rods to see if I can track it down. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Not that it helps either of us, but it’s somewhat reassuring to know it’s not unique to my vehicle. Thumbs Up

The first item to be replaced was the hpf pump. Made b**ger all difference. 🙁

If I was guessing ( which is what your main parts changer is doing !! ) I would say that is one of the idlers for the accessory drive belt . Does the noise reduce if you turn the air con off thereby removing some if the load of the belt ?
