The subframe bushes can cause a thunk, they aren't hard to do if you've a press (search for x5 subframe bush removal), but get genuine bushes not aftermarket c.£80 each.

Steve, thanks for the useful info. I still have not been able to replicate the 'thunk', as it's not convenient to return to the offending multi-storey! Seems to be a very specific set of circumstances that caused it. 2011MY 4.4TDV8 Autobiography Baltic Blue

Sorry if this reply is a bit too obvious or just a stupid comment.... but, are you sure it wasn't something in the back shifting around? This has happened to me before.
