Switching off DSC only causes a minor stiffening of the shocks at speed - nothing too dramatic but certainly detectable on rougher surfaces and when cornering.

Changing the compressor cannot affect ride quality, only the time it takes to get the required volume of air into the springs to reach the target height as determined from height sensor signals. However CVD module updates could affect ride quality.

Touching battery leads together achieves nothing because any charge held by capacitors in modules is depleted by the load of the electronics very soon after the first lead is disconnected and well before there is time to touch the 2 leads together. Disconnecting power will never erase programmable memory (EEPROM) which is where operational data is stored that is required for a seamless restart.

Struggling to get my head round how the alignment can affect the softness of suspension but its a Range Rover so who knows

If the steering weight changes with a cold start of a module then I suspect there's a programming bug, possibly in the module responsible for the steering but also possibly with another module that the steering module relies upon for data. You might want to check for any outstanding module updates.

You could be right Graemes, I'm not sure how I can check that though as I do not have an IID tool these days.

The steering has always been heavier on a cold start in the morning which makes no sense to me as these have electric steering.

All ive done with the past 3 Range Rovers is complain about the stiff ride and heavy steering.

Perhaps a Rolls Royce would be more to my liking?

Checked my shocks and they are all okay no leaks so the pondering continues...

Just filled up with fuel from virtually empty and straight away the ride has gone much firmer and the steering has weighted up.

Makes no sense at all to me

That's what ive been feeling on this l405 and both my previous facelift 322s.

Albeit he doesn't mention the steering feeling 'weightier'

Genuine JLR rear shocks are on order so should be here tomorrow...

Been thinking about this and a couple of thoughts.

1: in my old Evoque the active damping between normal and sport modes varied greatly depending on how heavy the car was. The steering the same. Lightly loaded normal driving = little difference noted. Heavy load = big noticeable difference. Also when the damper wore out, it didn’t leak but ended up with a huge amount of stiction which badly affected the handling on a long drive. Couldn’t notice it in the garage so took a long time to find. Maybe the dampers are binding up when warm?


2: is the car in its auto mode setting? Each of the off road modes will have different damping rates and and active cornering profiles and the active dynamics is meant to sense and adapt to what it thinks it’s reading as it drives along. Is it possible that the car is changing its mode or learning an adaption value? Does the issue go away it you explicitly set a driving mode ? V8 or else ...

If I were pulling my hair out like you are I’d be taking it to a specialist who works on them daily so that they can give you their thoughts on it.
