Crackling (?) noise from windshield corners?

Hello everybody!

Yesterday I recognized a crackling (sizzling) noise, coming mainly from the passenger corner at the windshield and only when driving faster than 100 km/h (60 mph). It is hard to describe it, but it sounds like a dry leaf is fluttering or the sound plastic makes when getting crumpled...not very loud but recognizable. Mainly from the passenger side (left), but sometimes also a little bit in the driver's side...always in the corners. Suspecting that it is coming from the inside...

I did a quick inspection under the hood but nothing obvious popped up. May be some foreign matter in the HVAC system at the filter? Noise gets then transported through the vents into the cabin? Could it be a noise from the speakers? Noise is only there when driving on the speedway, so I do not think that this related to the sound system but what do I know

Any hints are very much appreciated. Having my RR now for one week and start to recognize some things.

Thank you!

p.s.: It's a 4.4 TDV8 MY 2012

I have the same. I thought it may be a loose screw in the airbag area of the A pillar but all was good there. I think it is the external A pilar trim. The clips are notorious for breaking expeeically after a screen replacement. Could be that? They are c. £20.

Very good hints!

Will order the clips and give it a try on the A pillar external trims:)

Checking the airbag trims will not break the respective airbag pillar clips, will it? TDV8 4.4 MY2012 Vogue Trim

Mine does something similar to this too but only on really cold mornings. I had just put it down to plastic components in the dashboard corners expanding as they warmed up as the heating kicked in but will be interested to see if you guys come up with another cause for it. 2012 Westminster TDV8 4.4 Indus Silver

Was also checking the plastic trim now....had to find out there is a little gap to the windshield. Could not push it in, so will order some new clips and install them Smile

This should be the root cause for the noise. Will keep you posted. TDV8 4.4 MY2012 Vogue Trim

Short update:

I mounted new clips and now the noise is not completely gone, but the situation is much better. Really seems to be the root cause for this Smile

Might need to buy new trims to completely get rid of this noise. TDV8 4.4 MY2012 Vogue Trim

I found the original clips didn't hold the trim tight.
I found some slightly shorter ones and had to bash the trim quite hard to seat them resulting in no noise.

You don't happen to remember which clips you did buy, do you?

Maybe the ones from allbrit? TDV8 4.4 MY2012 Vogue Trim

check the inner part of the trim where it fits onto the windscreen (ie. nothing to do with the clips/pins on the door frame.) I found that the whole length had come away from the windscreen and needed glueing back down.

It is true that the whole length is not completely tight to the windscreen. You did not glue the rubberlip to the windscreen, did you? The lip is still nice sitting on the plastic trim

Kevinp's proposal sounds good to me, as slightly shorter/smaller pins may enable a tighter seat in the A pillar, resulting in a good fit towards the windscreen. No?

Besides that the problems are increasing lately with a supposedly half broken air compressor now...sigh... TDV8 4.4 MY2012 Vogue Trim

Hi Vektory, I've just been and had a look, but I've got dozens of clips and can't remember which ones I used!!
All I can tell you is they are only about 1mm shorter than the originals and have a barbed end rather than the looped design of the originals so they actually 'click' into place.
Sorry I can't help you more.
