Range Rover 3.6 fault codes

hi guys, need a land rover expert to help with this one!
my 2009 vogue 3.6 tdv8 started displaying : engine fault, transmission fault limited gears, suspension lowered (when it was not), hdc fault and park brake fault
took it to garage who used autologic diagnostics and found steering angle sensor needed recalibrated
3 days later, same problems came up again. if i stopped, switched off, restarted after a few attempts would clear.
i disconnected battery this would also clear.
so, when i started range rover, i turned steering wheel hard left, then hard right to set steering wheel sensor, this worked for a week, phoned garage, they suggested having wheel geometry checked by another garage with correct equipment, as this could possibly be the problem. front wheel geometry was out, rear wheel alignment slightly out.
3 days later, all usual fault codes come up again, so took back to autologic diagnostic, here is what they came up with:
8 modules with faults

9 modules not responding

engine control module
p0088-00 fuel rail/system pressure-too high

transmission control module
u2023-86 engine torque information signal is invalid

vehicle dynamics control module
uo4001-68 invalid data received from engine control module/powertrain control

all terrain control module
uo401-94 invalid data received from engine control module
uo402-94 invalid data received from transmission control module
uo416-94 invalid data received from vehicle dynamics control module
uo403-94 invalid data received from transfer case control module
uo421-94 invalid data received from ride level control module

parking brake control module
uo401-00 invalid data received from engine control module/poertrain control module

ride level control module
uo416-86 invalid data received from dynamics control module signal is invalid

instrument cluster
uo248-87 lost communication with remote driver utility module missing a message

garage suspect faulty high pressure fuel pump causing all faults, but are not willing to do as the cost to replace will be £1400 + vat + labour = £2000 or so with no guarantee this is actually the fault.(they are being honest) garage have advised i take to land rover to sort as they may have come across this problem before, i need you guys advise please??!!

fuel pressure values

engine speed 2028.00
fuel pressure (kpa) 36230.00
fuel pressure control valve (%) 15.98
fuel volume control valve (%) 17.33
fuel temperature 28 c

engine speed 743.00
fuel pressure (kpa) 22920.00
fuel pressure control valve (%) 12.95
fuel volume control valve (%) 11.77
fuel temperature 31 c

so i now have a range rover which will not drive over christmas hols with a mother-in-law in a home we cannot visit and 3 grandchildren we cannot visit as they live 1.5hrs away

help Big Cry
thanks, calum

Only 2 things control the high side fuel pressure, the PRV (Pressure Regulator Valve) or a spurious reading from the Rail Pressure Sensor, giving an incorrect value

As silly as it sounds, try a good dose of injector cleaner, Forte or Redex, and a dosing of 2 stroke oil. This will help lubricate the PRV, if it is indeed sticking

I have seen a few TDV8s with fuel pressure issues resolved by using 2 stroke oil in with the diesel. It's almost free, you have nothing to loose Thumbs Up

Do you have any idea what condition your battery is in? If by any chance it is original, it will be on its last legs by now. Is your alternator charging properly?

With so many different fault codes, there is a chance it is as simple as low voltage when cranking, especially if the weather is cold. I think I would start there. No guarantees, of course, but a simple and cheap fix if it turns out to be that. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Hi Mikey thanks for advise,
I did ask mechanic if he thought there was or could be a fault with any of the injectors, he said no as pressure readings were sourced at pump!!
The Fuel Volume Control Valve is reading 17.33 when it should be 19.89 at 2028rpm and only reads 11.77 when it should be 22.00 at 743rpm

I like the sound of the 2 stroke oil though

Hi steveball,
Battery is a replacement, seems to be in good condition as car always turns over and starts without any problem, but have not checked with a multimeter

In my experience, it's worth checking battery and charging system carefully. Electronics likely to show faults long before any symptoms of struggling to turn the engine over. Try to see how old the battery is. They really don't last forever. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Had a similar problem on a 3.6 a couple of years ago
If the faults are cleared do the exact same ones reappear?
I replaced loads of expensive bits like the fuel rail and sensor, both fuel pumps, and lots of other things that the codes were indicating to be at fault.
The fault finally turned out to be the underbonnet wiring harness, there was corrosion in the large connector to the main ECU which was apparently causing the communication faults and the clue was that the fault codes starting with a "U" were not always the same.
The harness was not very expensive (£300+) compared to the thousands that I spent on other bits - might be worth checking out first?

Hi Cass,
Personally this is what I was suspecting, a fault in wiring with a faulty sensor or corrosion to a connector somewhere?
The faults coming up are the same ones, when cleared it can be 3 days to a week before showing again.
Recent work on Range Rover was faulty parking sensors, so a new wiring loom was put in with a sensor!
Faulty fuel gauge so 2 new senders in fuel tank, this work was done under warranty from garage we bought car from, I am now wondering if proper Land Rover parts were used.
Car is stuck now and will not drive
Thanks for advise

I can't remember all of the details now as this was a few years ago but I do remember that in addition to all of the comms codes the one consistant thing was that the oil temperature always gave a stupidly low figure on the diagnostics as in minus
20C or something similar. I don't know if that is relevant but it might give you a pointer.
The corrosion was visible if you stripped back the insulation on the harness starting at the main ECU, problem was that the whole harness needed to be changed because of the fibre optic cables in amongst it.

Good luck

Should have added the rear brake caliper seized so was replaced by a local garage.
when carrying out the work it was noticed the brake pad wear indicator had at some point been broken, it had been glued in place!
The sensor was replaced, but, did water/corrosion get into wires which connect to sensor. Would this cause the faults?

HI MuddyLandy,
Did you resolve this issue as I now have the same fault code and symptoms.
Cheers

Update: Had a rummage around in the under bonnet box of relays, modules and wires and I have disturbed something as it is now ok. Will have a proper look tomorrow but it seems like the loom is the likely culprit. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal

Kind of same as above. Start with the battery then alternator, then move on to further investigations from there. Mechanics will all too gladly take your money whilst not getting to the bottom of what is frequently a simple problem.

JLR cars = lots of ECUs = high battery demand = sensitivity to voltage drop.

If the battery is fresh and the alternator has been tested (many smart chargers have this function) then move onto more investigations. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8
