I painted mine with black Hammerite Smooth, after masking off the silver bits. Not perfect, due to aluminium corrosion under the surface, but OK for now until I can figure out how to remove and send to the blasters. Removing bolts and hammering away with a mallet wouldn’t budge them 1mm The white is likely aluminium oxide rather than primer, yes that’s “rust” in aluminium-speak.

On the topic of roof access restricted, the side steps are quite High Tech and have sensors under the car that can detect obstacles. So the steps won't come out onto a rock or the likes of an obstruction and damage steps.

I’ve used truck bed liner paint on these previously, with excellent results - a very durable and slightly textured finish.
