Absolutely Gutted

Got to say I’m totaly gutted and fed up, engine was making a light ticking noise which I thought was the belt tensioner but then when I opened the oil cap the noise was awfull with lots of smoke, took it to my indi and they have say the left side of the engine had had a catastrophic failure of the piston rings on at least one of the pistons, long and short is I’ve been quoted £5000 for a replacement engine from a donar car, not sure what to do now, no idea what it’s worth as it stands it’s mint inside and out only had it 18 months 2012 Range Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8

How many miles and what was the service history? Very rare to have these engines fail internally unless they have been neglected. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

You are very unlucky then. Mine’s nearing that mileage but the trade in value is less than the quote for the engine so think carefully before you commit. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

what were the oil period changes from the history of the last owner? and was it a main dealer or indy or Halfords . it sounds like very long oil changes and very cheap oil has been used . which has made the oil ring or rings sized around the piston. new vehicle purchase

Regardless of the cause, that's gone now - Cost to repair, well, what is the value to you? trade-in value is only what someone else determines it is worth. How big is your 'to do' list? are there underlying issues? if you were looking at an ongoing spend, then cut your losses - if it's pretty sound, then get the engine sorted.

That’s a really bad bit of luck Sad

If you know the car and it’s a good one then it’s probably still worth repairing. You could buy another one have no end of problems with it.

Feel for you - I was in a similar position when the GM gearbox on my L322 failed.

£2.5k for a decent rebuild, then I thought about it (a bit like Phoenix's "to-do list")

£500 to respray 4 x panels (bleached by sun).

£350 for air con condenser & re-gas

£250 for a bit more welding.

A few other minor things making it just short of £4k, not really worth it for a clean but not mint one. Sadly scrapped (still have the wheels with an almost new set of matching tyres).

Went to the darkside & bought a Sport.

If you're on Facebook, look up JPSK Motors.

They're in Norwich IIRC but are regularly posting build videos of 3.0 V6's and they've posted a couple of rebuilt 4.4 V8's that they've done too.

Might be worth having yours rebuilt rather then a used engine as you've no idea what you're buying. They'd also be able to tell you what failed in yours and hopefully why.

Is the engine still running fine except for the ticking and noise when you take the filler cap off.
