Lower tailgate strut

Evening

I've recently changed both lower tailgate cables and and strut with genuine items.

Having never seen a "new" one work, I'm not sure if this is dropping properly. The strut seems to give up just short of the fully open position putting some stress on the cables. Is this normal or is the strut a duff?

Thanks

As far as I understand, the strut is just for damping purposes, to stop the tailgate dropping in an uncontrolled manner, the cables are designed to take the weight of the tailgate and anyone sitting on it, seems normal to me.

Earlier cars only have cables, no strut / damper.

PS - It would be handy if you updated your profile so people could see which model you have. Thumbs Up

Thanks - profile update.

Yep I understand how the cable/damper work, but the new damper seems to give up its 'damping' just short of the fully horizontal position. I'm sure I've seen an old thread with someone reporting the same on a new genuine damper so just wanted to double check.

Thanks I had a feeling it should do. I'll have to return it!

Tried it upside down just in case but it was worse.

Sounds like a similar problem I had with Britpart ones, their resistance is in the wrong direction!

Video of the problem I sent to Britpart. I ended up getting an LR one.

Don’t I know it. Had to replace my lower arms after 3 months because they’d worn out again. They were Britpart.

I’m really shocked to be frank because Britpart offer a 2 year warranty. How are they not going out of business?! Christian.
