Range Rover 5.0L Supercharged - CAM CHAIN - CAM BELTS

Does anyone know WHEN the

TIMING CHAIN on the 5.0 S/C need to be replaced ?

including the
Variators x4 ( x2 Inlet & x2 Outlet ) / Cam Chain Guides / x4 Guide Tensioners / Cam Chain x2

I have a feeling its around the 100K mark ????????

I did see a YouTube film of a L405 5.0 S/C having one done at 83,987K

I also read on the web:
https://british4wdspecialists.co.nz/land-rover-cambelt/
As a rule of thumb timing chains are supposed to last “the life of the engine”.

The only chain system I’ve seen seriously fail is the 4.4 Range Rover BMW V8 fitted from 2002-2005. It is known to break it’s chain guides & send horrible metal swarf all through the engine, requiring a full strip & rebuild. So if you have a high mileage one of these & plan to hold onto it, give us a call to make a plan.

As far as Land Rover cambelt & replacement are concerned, British 4WD Specialists stock a good range, have all the tools & are regularly carrying out this work for our customers.

One further note on Land Rover cambelt replacement is the matter of Discovery 3/Range Rover Sport 2.7 TDV6 oil pump failure. There have been cases where the pump body has cracked after a belt change causing the tensioner to break off & the engine to lose timing (pistons hit valves etc etc). Due to the tensioner being mounted on the body of the pump, the new belt (being tighter) amplifies any weakness that already existed.

Land Rover have brought out a modified (stronger) oil pump casting & we always recommend to our customers that this is changed at the same time. It may cost a bit more, but nothing like the cost of destroying one of these engines.
so what does anyone know on this subject -

I don't believe there is a specific interval for the chains. They just get replaced when you start hearing them rattle, start getting a misfire or a check engine light.

Hi Dave

Thanks for the reply - I ve asked our LR dealer - they don't seem to know also which is causing me a concern -
I think these can and do wear - everything wears at some point !

The question is how long do they last ? -

How long would the chain guides last ( Hard plastic in HOT OIL from my book in aircraft's is a no no - Cam Guides / Plastic in hot oil wear/breaks fast )

cheers fella for replying

On the Jag forums that I frequent the general consensus seems to be to listen for strange noises and rattles at start up. If you hear a rattle for a few seconds on cold start then it's worth thinking about getting the chains done.

Don't over think things and just enjoy it Smile That's what I'm doing with my XFR with the same engine in it.

I don’t believe there is a schedule for the chains sir… Should be fitted for life or when they start to rattle which ever comes first 👍

I've just "gone through this process". It started off with the clank at switch off which was the supercharger connecting piece (internal part three pin holes on each side). With that off the engine was making still making to much ticking noise. So the front of the engine came off and the the tensioner had collapsed (no longer pushing on the chain guide). There was play in the camshaft sprockets so they were replaced as well.

It is a major job (way beyond my beginner spannering skills) and was considerably extended by opening Pandora's box and finding other parts that needed doing and then ordering them from the UK. Plus don't forget to allow for some coolant lines that will inevitably spring a leek once you've had them off and on.

I am very happy with the result the engine is smooth as you like and has plenty of beans.

I got the supercharger rebuild kit from Quality super chargers, timing chain kit from Turners Engineering and the sprockets from LR Parts. I don't know know if I'm allowed to post these names here but they all worked.

If your going to get this done get all of the bits first because a lot of stuff needs to come off and it falls into the 'you might as well while you're there category'. Best of luck. Current

hey graham4242

that's great to hear - well done in getting her back together

can you tell us all the mileage

from what ive read anything from 82,000 miles ( 132,000 km ) to 120k ( 193,000 km )

i have the full jaguar landrover workshop manual which shows all the tools - local lr dealership cost parts at £3000 plus 3 days labour @ £195/hour £4095.00
total for this job around £ 6,000 to £ 7000.00 uk

what i am trying to get to the bottom is -

has anyone had this done

what mileage ?

surley every chain on the planet will stretch - no such thing as sealed for life
even the cam chain guides will wear out - plastic guides sitting in hot oil is a no no

what we always say at work is " what goes round must slow down "

but thanks graham4242 for adding to this thread - appreciated
