Fuel gauge question

Hi all

I have had the fuel gauge fault on my 4.4TDV8 for a while now. But then it fixed itself !!! And has been fine so i left it…
But now its back !!!! So now I will defiantly fix it.

Somewhere in the back of my mind i thought I read that when the car thinks its out of diesel (ie the fuel gauge reads empty and the warning on the dash is on) it stops the engine even though there is plenty of fuel in the tank?

Or will it run as normal until the diesel actually runs out ?

Hope its the latter and I’m just having a brain fart !!!

There's a very detailed thread on fixing the common fault with one of the sender connections in the tank. The search function should find it for you.. Smile Bish.

I’m ok with fixing it, and have got the Landrover sheet that someone kindly sent to me.

My tank is too full at the moment to carry out the repair. Even though it’s reading nearly empty.

I was wondering what happens if I continue to drive the car when the gauge says it’s completely empty. 2011 4.4 TDV8

From my own experience on a 4.4 TDV8 I know that it will cut the engine but it does give a brief warning with what feels like a misfire. Switching off and restarting seems to reset things but not for long (minutes not days)
I got around this by fitting a variable resistor across the sensor wires at the tank, this kept me going for a couple of months until the weather improved enough to motivate me to do the job properly.

There is also a TSB available to explain the issue with the fuel pump wiring in the saddle tank and the car running out at 1/4 tank still showing on the gauge... Thumbs Up

I can state for certain that my (now departed) 2010VSE 3.6 worked perfectly well with the fuel gauge cable fault inside the tank as I drove it like that for a few months without any issues. there was no warning on the dash other than the needle reading zero fuel. 2010 VSE [Roger]
