England 2003 Range Rover HSE Td6 Epsom Green
3.6 tdv8 torque converter

Hi All

I believe the torque converter is on the way out On my Range Rover but is there anything else to check before biting the bullet?

Symptoms are a judder in 3rd gear around 1900 to 2200 rpm up hill. You can accelerate through it and it smooths out. Under hard throttle there is no judder only under light acceleration. No real difference between drive, sport and manual mode. There is also a whirring noise that occurs at the same time with a faint sound of a straight cut gear whine but it is an oscillating type noise.
No excessive slipping. Even putting it in manual mode at low rpm and suddenly putting foot to the floor. Gear changes are incredibly smooth. Gearbox oil and sump have been replaced by previous owner with genuine zf oil and sump. Oil level is correct.

Any suggestions?

I put shudder fix in my 3.6 at 97K (Doctor Tranny) as a temp fix, it lasted well over 50K and with regular trans oil changes, (every other service) was kept at bay. Not sure if I was just lucky but it worked on mine up to 165K when I eventually sold it.

I’ll try the shudder fix see what that does. It might buy me some time to save pennies for a torque converter. If the shudder fix sorts the problem or lessens the juddering then is it safe to assume it’s definitely the torque converter?

Yes I would say so, it did on mine anyway. I would change the trans fluid at the same time as the chances are it will be degraded anyway.
