Restricted Performance Red Light

Hi,

So more problems with my lovely 2011 4.4 TDV8 (70.000 miles)

I was acceleration to 70 mph and once there i felt a small "judder" as 8th gear clicked in. Immediately after I got a red restricted performance light.

I slowed down and drove 5 minutes to the nearest garage I could find. The last few 100 yards were lights, speed bumps etc and after each acceleration there was a clear "whining" noise coming from the engine. sounded almost like a cat....

Car was hooked up to diagnostics in the garage and threw up (amongst other things) 7 fault codes under engine management;

Some fault in turbo B
Something with air mass flow
something with temperature
water in fuel sensor

The idiot mechanic deleted all fault codes before i could copy them as he said one fault can cause another and so on.

We started car up again and now it did not show any faults. Drove approx 1 mile home without issue.

Any ideas what this could be and do I dare drive around in it? Or should I just take it to nearest LR dealer?

Oh, and the car has an oil leak and smells of burnt oil after driving at motorway speeds...

The ECU records every momentary error.
Clearing codes then seeing what returns is the typical process in my experience.

Others may correct me here.

I would keep going and monitor.

I'd also order a fault reading device. Ideally an IID Tool.
The IID's are expensive but hold their value.

And it means the 'character' of your car can be analysed at any moment!

Thanks Greg,

Would just have been useful to copy old fault codes before he deleted them to compare what comes back.

I guess I will keep driving and see what happens...

Will order IID tool asap too.

Get it to a LR expert and diagnose the leak. Could be a failing turbo Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

AJ, Sounds preferable to a new turbo...

I just drove approx 15 miles, carefully not revving above 2.000 rpm.

Yellow restricted performance light came on straight away but at least it wasn't red Very Happy

Oil leak could be the oil cooler gasket or the 2 o rings on the pipe into it. Lots on here. Easy to diagnose.

@ Rob, last garage diagnosed it as the oil cooler gaskets but only that the car was "sweating" oil so thought I´d have it fixed and next oportunity, let´s see if the main dealer comes to the same conclusion...

@AJ, thanks for the link, could be it as red light came up just after acceleration.

If you get a chance, take the engine cover off and shine a torch into the middle of the V of the engine.

If you see oil then the cooler is leaking. If you don't, then it's likely to be the O rings on the rear oil feed pipe.

BTW, the second turbo on the 4.4 doesn't really get going until 2500 rpm, so staying below 2000 rpm may have stopped the warning turning red.

Thanks mrpirie.

So from reading the various forum threads i can read out four types of oil leaks?

* Oil cooler gaskets
* Cracked oil cooler
* Oil pump
* O-rings on rear pipes

While the mechanics have things taken down, does it make sense to change parts as future prevention? I.e save some money/time on work that will need to be done at some point anyway? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

How many miles on your RR jackie?

Over 80k you might want to think about changing the idler pulleys.

Greg, it´s almost exactly at 80k miles but belts and pully´s were already done 2 years ago : )

Just got the car back and all fault codes gone exept for water in fuel sensor which was traced to mice chewing on the cables about 4 inches from the sensor....hopefully easy fix

Oil leak clearly from from the V so I hope new gaskets will sort that.

They did find an air leak coming from the back of the engine - they suspect the EGR but needed to remove air intake manifold to check further. This is likely cause of previous fault codes...

They estimate 2 hours of work to strip down and give exact cause of air leak and oil leak

Any first thoughts on the air leak? Sounds like it could be the 4 intake pipes as per link from AJ? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11
