I have asked before if anyone has experience of a loud clunk when braking at low speed, it was suggested it was a gearbox parking pawl safety feature. I am far from convinced as it seems to be getting louder. It occurs only on braking, even at the lightest touch of the pedal before the car has started to slow. It does not happen in reverse and is not apparent when the car is cold. From the driver's seat, it seems to be coming from the left rear, I have removed both rear calipers, cleaned and fitted new pads. I can find no excessive play in the subframe buses although have not counted them out. there is a little play in the top hub carrier bushes which have been ordered to change out. Any Ideas, I have read others having similar clunk but never tracking it down. Without touching the brakes there are never any clonks going over uneven ground or accelerating hard.
Anyone had a rear shock bush fail, what were the symptoms 2007 TDV8 VSE

Shock bushes can do this but to get an audible clonk they would need to have chunks missing...

Have you checked to see if the pads are moving in the callipers, the calliper can wear and then as the pistons hit the pads, the pads hit the disc, grab it and jump and hit the callipers as the play is taken up, this also happens if the stainless pad seats are missing...

Easy to check, see if the pads can move at all up and down within the carrier...

It only takes a small amount of movement to clonk, and doesn't tend to happen in reverse....  Pete

My starting place would be the suspension bushes. When my upper arm bushes needed replacing they did clunk somewhat. They also caused my tyres to wear badly on the edges.

Haylands, thanks for the tips, I will check pad movement when I change to the top hub bushes. It makes sense the noise is coming from the pads and that's why I changed them, I did not think to check for movement. 2007 TDV8 VSE

So today I received my new top hub carrier bushes which I changed out in record time, about 40 mins a side. I must say it's a delight to work on an 18-year-old car with zero rust. Pics are of both sides with the new bushes in. The good news is that after a quick test drive dabbing the brakes lightly there was not one knock so I am positive that was the issue. The not-so-good was once the hub was released from the top bush it was evident the bottom bush on the left side was in a bad way so that's the next job.
