Obsolete from LR - L322 ABS/ Wheel Speed Sensor

I have a OSR ABS/ wheel speed sensor fault which has a code on my on my GAP tool. The LR part no is SSF500021 - now discontinued by LR!!!

My car is a 2012 TDV8, does anyone know who the OE supplier was? I always prefer to fit genuine OE or OES for these types of systems where sensor signals are so critical to correct operation and reliability.

I have seen the sensor from a 2007 car which is branded Siemens, but I can’t find a source for Siemens. Does anyone have experience of this?

Island 4x4 are showing a replacement by Delphi whose parts I have used and been happy with. Others on here have also recommended Delphi. If that is of any use to you.

Thanks Weegie, I know Delphi very well - used to work for them! I was working for Delphi on the wiring system from the very early development with BMW.

Delphi or Bosch are my back up option if I can’t locate a Siemens VDO sensor. Delphi aftermarket parts will generally only be manufactured by Delphi where Delphi were the OE supplier.

I know the ABS unit and steering angle sensor are Bosch, so maybe Bosch could be the best option.

Shocking how quickly L322 parts are becoming obsolete from Land Rover. Kevin

Kevin, I am in the process of having my aircon re-done on my 2008 Tdv8. One of the parts is a hose connecting the compressor to the condenser. None available in the UK, including Land Rover. I am waiting on delivery from Belgium from a company I had dealt with when living in France.

Other parts were proving almost equally hard to get.

Some pattern parts available but, like you, I’m not interested. 👍 John

The Bosch ABS sensor is freely available at £50ish, Delphi and TRW (who made a number of the braking components) are around £30-35.

I see John Craddock have genuine sensors in stock. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Hello Gary,

Living not too far from Craddocks and unable to get through by phone I went to them on Friday. Regardless of what their website says they have zero stock of any brand of ABS sensor, which was disappointing.

The OE supplier was definitely Siemens in 2007, you can clearly see the name moulded into the flat edge of the sensor near the fixing screw. I am going to check under my car tomorrow if the same.

Price isn’t really the issue on this part, I know how sensitive the system is to receiving the correct signals. Any deviation from the OE specification can lead to problems.

If I can’t find an OE sensor I will go with Bosch.

Anyone have experience of Bosch ABS sensors on the L322? Kevin

As a side note - it might be worth checking your ABS reluctor ring on that drive shaft too while you're there.

More often than not, the ring has gone out of round due to corrosion underneath it, and it rubs on the ABS sensor causing it to fail or just go out of spec, throwing the error code.

Really common fault on BMWs but have had one L322 do this before too.
Would hate to see you source one and then a mile down the road it's toast again!

Thanks for that tip. I have seen videos of reluctor rings corroding and coming loose, so I will check that.

Have you any experience of changing the rings or did you fit a new drive shaft? Kevin

Not wanting to divert Epsom Green's thread too far off-topic, but for hydraulic hoses, I always use a local place that makes them for plant, forklifts, etc. Just take an old one and they'll make one up. I remember a few years ago I had an old Silver Shadow that needed a hose, RR wanted hundreds for one. Local hydraulic hose place: £26. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography in black

Yes I've done a few on various projects, very easy to change and cost effective compared to a new driveshaft. A new ring is normally less than £10 whereas a shaft is normally hundreds.

It may be fine of course, it'll be interesting to see if the sensor has just failed on it's own or not.

Very easy when you have the driveshaft out....

Getting it out on an 11 year old Range Rover can take some doing, getting it back, even harder...

JLR use a specific tool and it can still be a right faff....

Besides dismantling the rusty fixings what is the difficulty in reassemble, is it aligning the drive shaft spline into the hub splines? Kevin

The biggest pain doing this job is slackening / removing old rusty fastenings, apart from that the job is not too bad, a powerful impact wrench makes the job a lot easier, plus daily application of WD40 or similar every day for a week prior to dis-assembly. But...I am a marine engineer so its second nature to me...as for re-fitting the drive shaft it was only a little bit of a faff to match up the splines to fit the drive shaft and to engage the shaft into the knuckle / hub. To get the drive shaft into the 'fully inserted' position into the diff, once the splines were engaged I gave the shaft a small tap with a lump hammer to push the shaft fully home and get the spring clip to open into place as shown in the photo below. Support the drive shaft ( I used zip ties )so it is lined up and use wood to protect the end of the splines when tapping into place.

I fitted a new drive shaft as the reluctor ring was rusted into place in the knuckle / hub, not stuck on the drive shaft!!!! Hope this helps Thumbs Up

Thanks Merchy, great information.

I have previously done the upper and lower rear hub ball joints, so I have a good idea of the size of challenge. Good to know aligning the splines is doable.

I am expecting the ring to be part of the problem, if it is corroded I will replace the ring as opposed to the entire shaft £10 vs £400/£500!

I did manage to buy the last remaining (apparently) genuine LR ABS sensor in the country from Lloyd LR in Carlisle which was a result.

Hopefully the rain holds off this weekend and I can get into it.
