The cylinder heads are now ready to collect. Just need to sort out a day this week to go and fetch them Smile

Despite sorting the oil ways out and adding the pins for the timing chain guides to sit on, they're still within the estimate he gave before starting the job.

I'm over the moon.

The company is called Automotive Component Remanufacturing in North Wales (Sandycroft, Deeside). I'd not hesitate to recommend them from the service I've had so far. Thumbs Up 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Good move using that company for the work on the heads, looks like you dodged a bullet there Thumbs Up

I have filed away the company name, if I ever need their services, they are on my door step. Very Happy

Back to sea tomorrow, or rather start travelling to another vessel tomorrow and the internet on board is crap, so I will probably have a lot of reading to do when I get home, will look forwards to your 'running reports' of the beast.
keep up the good work, hope the rest is plain sailing, yeah I know, a VERY bad pun Thumbs Up

The cylinder heads are now home from Automotive Comp in Deeside.

We left home last night in my Dads IPace. It was 100% charged when we left home. A quick 25 minute stop at Gretna Services for a cup of coffee and a top up charge (£15.92 rapid charge) saw us arriving at the hotel with 66 miles range left.

We left the hotel with 100% charge this morning (£5.22 overnight charge), collected the cylinder heads and then headed back for Glasgow. Another 25 minute top up charge whilst grabbing a cup of coffee at Gretna (£14.20) gave us enough range to get home with 36 miles of range left.

In total it was 516 miles covered for a total cost of £35.34. It’s the first time I’ve ever covered any distance in the IPace and must admit, I’m really impressed.

So £35 vs. circa £250 if you'd gone in your supercharged.

I’ve been busy since I got back! As a hobby we’ve got 12 sheep that keep the land looking fresh and they needed to be sheered so it was straight from the IPace to the P38 and to hitch the trailer on!

Going to sort myself out tomorrow and see where I’m at. Smile

I didn’t say I’d done nothing Laughing

I’ve got the manifold on the NS head and have got the head ready to refit.

Am trying to borrow a torque wrench from a friend which is digital and has a built in angle gauge. I’d like to be able to have this for reassembly as none of my torque wrenches have been calibrated in years.

Today I put a PC in the workshop so I can have quick access to the workshop manual for tightening sequences and torque figures. It’s not pretty but it’ll work perfectly for what I need it to do.

Monitor is sitting in the corner of the toolbox. There’s a piece of wood across the legs of stand which has been screwed to the toolbox so the monitor can’t fall off.

The base unit has 2 ratchet straps around it and is then cable tied to the handle on the side of the toolbox. I’ve tied the excess cable there too to keep it out of the way.

I’ve also torqued down the first manifold this evening.

Did it in stages, first all the bolts were tightened until they were just snugged up, I then took them to 10Nm, from 10Nm up to 15Nm and then to the final torque of 20Nm before going around them all once more to make sure they were done.

Interestingly, all of the manifold bolts on both heads were wrong according to the parts catalogue. My car had 16 flanged bolts but according to the parts catalogue it should have much longer bolts with spacers on them to allow the heads to stay torqued as they heat and cool down.

Everything on this car is going back as per the parts catalogue though so it should be properly sorted when finished.

There was a bolt that had been cross threaded into the block before and when I tried to remove it on disassembly it snapped. I’d forgotten about that so I’m going to need to try and drill that out of the side of the block and repair the thread.

Access to that bolt is much easier with the head off so until I’ve dealt with that I’m not starting reassembly.

This is all looking very good. I'm a happy bunny as we did the 1st start up of the 2nd rebuild on my m62 engine today. I'm happy to report everything seems good. Just some tidying up todo, lpg to reconnect, air con to regas etc etc but early signs for my engine seem very promising .

Everything crossed for you.

That’s great news, Dave! You must be relieved.

Couple of things holding me up at the moment…

1. When I was removing the bracket that holds the air con compressor to the block one of the bolts was horrendously tight. I took the front one out and the bracket was loose so it wasn’t even holding the bracket. It ended up sheering when trying to remove it. It looks like it’s been cross threaded by someone before.

There’s a local guy who is excellent at removing sheered bolts and repairing the threads and only charges £40 per bolt/thread so I’m hoping I can get him out this week.

A lot of the issues I’m sorting with this car are due to someone else having been in here before me.

2. I’m waiting to get my hands on a digital torque wrench that does angles to make torquing the heads easier. A friend of mine is going to sort me out with a loan of one shortly.

I’m also waiting for a couple of last deliveries to arrive so I’ve got everything I need parts wise as well.
