Got everything crossed, Pete!

I don’t mind fixing things that haven’t already been fixed but if I had to do the same jobs again I won’t be happy!

As usual, I enjoy reading this thread for your posts, very informative and interesting. Thumbs Up However, may I offer you some useful advice Sir ?

On page 35, you quoted some of the prices you paid for parts / services etc Big Cry
Surely a mistake Sir, firstly SWMBO might see them Embarassed secondly, this could well lead to a nervous breakdown when you realise how much money you have spent. not including you hourly rate Shocked

I did start to list what I had spent on my humble Td6, with no major faults ( so far - I hastily add, whilst on my knees preying ) once I got to page five, I realised I was in trouble. Nursey has now increased my medication and the latest diagnosis seems to be, a bad case of Range Roveritis Very Happy

Latest medical research indicates that this disease is thought to be incurable, with no cure known to man Censored Banging Head Thud

I paid £2,500 for the car in December 2020 and have it delivered the first week of 2021.

Including delivery it was just under £2,800 it owed me.

I’m now over £10k into it Big Cry However, I should have a near perfect RR when I’m finished Smile

Thinking of 'costs', once you have completed the jobs you will have a hell of a car. You will then have that priceless commodity known as 'Peace of mind' A lovely thing to have when driving a FFRR Very Happy

Part of me was a bit gutted that I wasn't doing my own valve clearances and part of me was a firm believer in paying someone to do a job that would mean hours and hours of strip down if I got it wrong wasn't a bad idea.

This morning I got an email from Automotive Comp to tell me that my heads were ready to collect and that the valve clearances are all set. He got them all spot on using tappets that he had in stock which meant that none of the valves needed grinding Very Happy

I am now 100% sure that sending the heads to him was the right decision as he noticed something that I hadn't and it would have been catastrophic if I'd fitted them!

The cylinder heads for the 4.4 Naturally Aspirated V8 and the 4.2 Supercharged V8 are identical but the 4.4 has variable valve timing and the Supercharged doesn't. This means that there is one critical difference in the heads - the oil ways!!!The Supercharged engine has a bung pressed into the heads whereas the 4.4 doesn't.

I hadn't noticed this when comparing the heads but the chap at Automotive Comp picked up on it and told me about it. I am eternally grateful to him as if I'd have fitted these heads I'd have had no oil pressure. Goes to show you that paying someone who knows an engine inside out to do a job that you're not sure of is 100% worthwhile.

So I'm breathing a sigh of relief whilst eating my toast and drinking my morning coffee today! Laughing

He's also going to sort out the silver steel pins that mount the timing chain guides for me so that the heads are ready for refitting when I get them back next week.

Me too, Sandy!

Not gonna lie - sitting here feeling like one of the luckiest blokes in the world this morning as the keen eye of someone who knows what they're doing has saved me fortunes. Smile

I believe this bit circled is the bit that’s missing on the new heads from looking at the photographs I’ve got. It’s 6mm in diameter and recessed so very easily missed!

Decided tonight that I might as well do something useful with the old cams. Well, one of them anyway.

I got a sprocket from an old Citroen engine that I had sitting around and drilled the central hole out to the same size as the RR camshaft and then pressed the sprocket onto the cam.

I need to mill a slot into into the pulley to accommodate the cable and a metal bulb holder rather then the plastic one I used to mock it up tonight.

Quite pleased with how it’s looking so far…
