2008 3.6 gearbox issue

Hello, first time poster here and I have a problem.
Something is not right with my gearbox. When its warmed up and I accelerate normally (not booting it) the revs fluctuate and when it gets to 3rd and 4th gear (I think) it seems like its changing up and down rapidly. also the rev counter flutters a bit when cruising.
When I boot it the problem seems worse with the rapid changing.
The revs still fluctuate even in manual mode, I have trawled the forums and the net and found things like the solenoids need changing or the torque converter is duff.
Any help would be appreciated as I don't want to spend money on one thing to find out its another.

Hi,
When was the oil in the box and filter (pan) last changed? I would start with this for beginning. Use land rover TKY 500050 suitable oil. That would be zf lifeguard 6 or something that must have this specification. I am using liqui moly atf 1800 at the moment. RR HSE 4.4 2006 LPG

I have no idea if the oil has ever been changed so I think I will get this done first.
Did you notice a difference in your gearboxes after you had yours done?

In your instance I would suggest a 'megaflush' where 99% of the oil is flushed out & replaced rather than a 'oil & filter' change which only gets 40%-60% of the fluid out.
Budget £300-£400 for this hopefully. If you're oil is shagged you'll soon notice the difference. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

My experience for what its worth
Had mine megaflushed at 90k miles just after I bought it. Not sure this was a good idea just drain and refill sounds kinder to the box. Don’t reset adaptations. It will not do it any good apparently.
Started to get Rev fluctuations And clunky changes and what felt like slipping clutch.
Then the vibration started on the torque converter and changed at 105k mikes including gen filter and zf oil.
Haven’t done any solenoids and so far all good. Now on 115k Smooth as silk but not a cheap job. Should have done it all together and saved the first flush and oil fill.

Only my opinion but think the tc shudder will come about at some point So get it out of the way and enjoy the smoothness and knowledge you won’t have to pay out again. I wish I had. Jon

Nothing has the same specification of the ZF oil no matter what it says on the bottle, the oil will be to the same spec but it will not have the friction modifiers that the ZF oil has..! Pete

Have a read on the ZF website and give ZF customer support a call. The ZF process is to drain, replace the sump/filter with a new one and fill with ZF oil they do not recommend a megaflush. After all would you change engine oil and leave the dirty filter? Bear in mind the age of your filter... I know there are fans of the the megaflush on here but best to do your research.

Been there done that - fingers crossed for you.

Try a tube of Dr. Tranny instant shudder fixx (yes it's a real thing) and costs next to nothing

I did with mine and it did the trick for a while although ultimately it was the torque converter and I had to have it replaced. Sorted all issues immediately.

Update.
I changed the oil and filter (with ZF lifeguard 6) and while I was in there I replaced the valve body seals and tested the solenoids. All the solenoids were good so I slapped it all back together and it is running a lot better, not perfect but there is a vast improvement.
I am guessing the reason its not perfect is the fact there is still some crappy oil in there.
