Back from my journey and covered 103 miles not quite without incident though. Soot reading before I left home showed 15.2g and apparently after 30 miles it still showed 15.2g (not sure I believe that). Drove on another 10 miles or so to the next destination and took another reading, this time it showed 18.4g. Arrived home and took another reading, this time it shows 17.1g so apparently it did drop, albeit only a tiny amount. This may have been due to the roads I was on, mainly A roads but some constant 55 - 60 MPH for 10 minutes or so. There has been 5 attempted regenerations and 2 successful ones. I assume I wasn't able to complete a full regen due to not enough time at a constant speed. I filled the car up (at current prices it would be crazy not to) but always make sure I have above a quarter of a tank at all times. I did boot it a couple of times to clear out any oil that may have been residing in the 2nd turbo and did notice some smoke each time but probably no more than I would expect from a diesel under load. I detoured slightly on to way home so I could get a 10 minute run on the motorway, however, accelerating from the slip road caused a restricted performance message to pop up so I sat behind a lorry at around 55MPH and waited for my exit. Found a quiet place to stop and read the faults codes, only one showing was a drivers seat error. Cleared all faults anyway and the restricted performance triangle went off and all was good again. So I decided to drive like a demon the rest of the way as it's 60MPH country roads so I kept using the kickdown trying to get the restricted performance to reappear but try as I might it wouldn't. So my conclusion is that the DPF is filling up faster than it should despite no issues with the way the car drives, plenty of power and super smooth, this would point to an intake leak which obviously I can't get checked until my indy can open again. Or, this is just a red herring and the car is screaming out to do a full regen which means getting back to the motorway and doing a 30 minute drive in the hope this brings the soot level back down to single figures. I'm looking for a brick wall to bang my head against just now but knowing my luck, the wall would fall down and break my foot Rolling with laughter 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

You don’t necessarily need to boot it to get a RP message. If you look at some of us who have suffered similar, the RP came up when under gentle acceleration or Holding a steady rpm. Mine always occurred on the same stretch of my commute (M4) at 75 mph, just as a small demand was made on the engine at the start of a slight incline. I could almost guarantee when it would happen.

My fault was a cracked inlet manifold which cost £1600 to replace (it involves a new injector harness etc but you do get the new modified plenum pipes). Only a hi pressure smoke test revealed the small Crack. This is a well known part fault and is all over the jag and disco forums on the 3.0L engine.

Don’t get hung up about the soot levels. The car will do small regens as required under normal driving. It is designed to do this, even when not at more than 50 mph etc. So your soot levels will come down in small amounts under normal driving and can go up to 20-odd without a problem. However when yellow dpf warning comes up, then you will need to do a 50mph+ stretch at a constant speed (I find using CC best). This will do a forced regen.

Had a quick look under the bonnet, the plastic pipe to throttle body is nice and dry but on the plenum there is clearly some oil misting to see. Would be nice to think that this is down to the oil filter cover and not the plenum itself although not hopeful. As soon as I can get the high pressure smoke test carried out I will provide further updates

Well at least I have some good news.
We have just done an 80 mile round trip, all on B roads, so not quick, when we left soot level was 8.3g, when we got home 10g (high was 10.7g) well chuffed, the other day it was going up 2g every 4-5 km.
The only thing that I have done is wiggle the connection to the throttle body, perhaps it has resealed it?
Time will tell, but at the moment very relieved.
Plus, averaging over 30mpg even on these rural roads.

Steve

Hi Steve, that all sounds very positive, hopefully it was just those plenum pipes that were giving you the issue. Thumbs Up 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Good news Steve Thumbs Up
The Workshop Manual says , generally expect an active regen approx every 250 miles (400km) of use.

Mine seems to equate to approx one per tank full, or 425 - 450 miles, but I still monitor it regularly, particularly asi it gets to 15- 17g, when (under normal circumstances) I plan a decent motorway trip to get it back in single figures.

Hi BB
Something definitely happened, as the day before, it was gaining 2g in 5km, last night less than 2g in 80 mile round trip, no dual carriageway, or motorway!
I’m getting bloody obsessed with it now, plug th iid in every trip, don’t talk to the wife whilst driving, as i’m watching my iPhone readout😂😂😂😳😷
My god these cars make you paranoid!

Rolling with laughter , I came to exactly the same conclusion over 3 years ago, .
The next step is you teach your wife to take “screenshots “ so you can have an album in photos called “ DPF diary”.
Take care.

Quick update
After my relief the other night, soot level started to rise quickly again😩😩
So this morning, I took the hose and fitting off, cleaned everything, and done the PTFE tape trick, wasn’t too bad to do
(Tip: wrap the tape around 1/2 a pencil, it’s much easier to apply)
Fitting now feels a lot tighter than before, only time will tell if it makes much difference.

Bon weekend
Steve

Ok let’s see how you get on there Steve.

As BB said it will regenerate approximately in line with tank range mileage. So it will fill up. But with regular 50mph usage it will manage itself.

One thing to note is the grams value is not absolute, it’s a calculated number which will explain the fluctuations. The ecu measures various inputs like oxygen, throttle, boost and - the main one - the DPF pressure difference in vs out.

You may want to clean your MAP and MAF sensors too, fairly easily done.

. Cheers, Greg

Hi Dr Rob
Don’t really know at the moment, as haven’t used it much since putting the ptfe tape on, but must say it seemed a lot more secure after.
Don’t know how long the ptfe will last, should be ok, it doesn’t get that hot does it?
Definitely worth a try I think, will keep you posted.

Steve
