If you do buy one with a 6. Month warranty then negotiate it up to at least 1 year. Make that a deal breaker. They will budge (I did it on mine and got a free one year Warrantywise throw. In for the price

things that should have been done by that age/mileage (but usually get left):
- auxiliary belt and tensioner changed
- gearbox oil flushed and changed
- all other fluids changed (all oils, coolant, brake fluid)

potential issues that might occur by then, but don't affect all (depends on how they are used):
- 4.4 tdv8 turbo drain mod
- oil cooler / seals leaking
- inlet hoses splitting
- suspension bushes/arms
- cables on front struts breaking (can be repaired, or replaced with more flexible loom update)
- rear wheel arch rust
- rear top tailgate lower edge rust

Not an exhaustive list but some things to check / look out for Wink Too many toys, not enough time

Thanks all. I've got my eye on two cars:

This 2011 model with 70k miles on the clock for £19k. Will come with a 6 month Platinum Warrantywise warranty from a specialist Vogue dealer, who says he has never had a claim denied on that policy. (and I like that he will know these cars well)

Gutted - turns out this car doesn't have any service history! No invoices, nothing Big Cry Got my heart set on that one. I know condition should trump service history, and apparently it is very good on that front. But zero history?! It is probably a lost book, but regardless, I can imagine how hard that would be to sell later on. Interesting, as a few people said on here is was already too expensive, James at the Vogue Centre said it would be £23k+ if it had history. They do have a really nice one but I'm not paying £25k! https://www.thevoguecentre.co.uk/used-cars...6078782296

I'm still going to head up to Manchester to see the other, higher mileage car on Saturday, I had just hoped to see a few considering it's a 6hr round trip.

Keep an eye on the for sale section here. Best port of call IMHO.

No history, especially from a large dealer is definitely a big 'no-no'. Very surprised they are selling it without history or at least tried to salvage some history from the previous owners somehow.
Find one with history of some sort even just to show it's been somewhere when it should have.
Keep looking & as others have said, keep looking on here. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Yes it surprised me to be honest, apparently they are known for supplying very good examples. Seems to be asking quite a lot of money for one with no history though. Shame, as aside from that it is perfect. Was planning to go up there tomorrow and would've put a deposit down

This is a really good overview! Also add the air suspension that will likely go at some point?

I am a little bit in the same position as OP.

I can buy a car with 100k miles that has had all of the above done (incl. air suspension) or a car with 75k miles but has only had the drive belt replaced. Price is the same for both and they have both been very well maintained. So question I guess; is it worth giving up miles for peace of mind that all big tickets have been done?

I know there is an impressive list of "max miles" on here but is there a limit to where you would not buy a car?

Would you for example consider buying a 2010 car with 140k miles? RR Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - 11

For me, I think I would rather have the car with the higher mileage that had all the required work carried out, that would mean I would have many miles to drive trouble free rather than having to think/plan for the future work to take place. There seems to be a bit of a hang up on mileage, condition and maintenance history are far more important.

140k on a 9 year old car isn't particularly excessive. I had a Jag Sovereign 2.7 tdiv6 with 242k when I sold her & I would have taken her anywhere. A 10 plate CLS 3.0 tdv6 with 180k, again faultless. I've got an old Galaxy that according to DVLA has 300k & still going. One of the forum members bought a 10 plate 4.4 TDV8 with 300k miles at a very good price, had a few issues, but nonetheless less look what he got for his buck!
The big plus with these engines are, that they just don't rev so presumably aren't stressed. So to answer your question, no, 140k on the 'right' car wouldn't put me off.......price dependent. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

100k miles is a psychological barrier not a mechanical one.

I bought m 2011 L322 on 107k and it's absolutely fantastic. I could have afforded a lower miles car at the time but this one had the spec I wanted, colour, trim combo so I went for it, saving around £3k at the time in exchange for the higher miles.

Actually 2010-12 L322's can show up issues after 80k miles (starter and also alternator for example). So the logic that a post-80k car has been sorted is sound - and true in my case. Not sure about L405's because those issues are mainly around the new at the time 4.4TDV8. But I know early 405's with the TDV8 still had quite a few carry over issues form the L322 - turbo drain for example.

I also do low miles per year (5-6k) so I also used that logic to convince myself I'll "catch up" to typical miles for it's age.
Three years later I've not clocked too many on the odometer and I'm about to hit 120k miles which is isn't too wrong for a 2011 but still a bit unpalatable for some if I decided to sell but I realise my sale price (eventually) will reflect it's miles.

. Cheers, Greg
