It could simply be that the float switch in the header tank has got stuck, or

Could be the float stuck however the old wives tale of specific gravity of the coolant being low is never going to be the cause. The sensor is a magnetic reed switch that never comes into contact with the coolant. My experience with the earlier cars shows the exciter magnet, or whatever is within the float to switch the magnetic reed switch loses its power, the only reliable remedy is a new expansion tank if that is the problem 2007 TDV8 VSE

Replacing the air con compressor doesn't involve disturbing any of the cooling system.
