2012 TDv8 56k miles, White/Grey smoke and oil use

the joys of a RR!

having had the turbo mod drain done soon after having the vehicle 42k miles Mar 17, i have enjoyed a wonderful 15k miles or only routine services.....

anyway - low oil wng came on over weekend, took 3+ L to refil to correct level using Hawkeye.

have pondered it for a while then thought its not been used hard lately so drove it hard up through command shift this am.

tonnes of white/grey smoke out the back for 3s above 3000rpm followeded by Restricted Performance, DTCs P042B and P2297

It made a bit of a rattle just before i turned it off.

Cleared the DTCs.

on restart ran lumpy for 2-3s then settled.

pulled out and fine until 3000rpm then white/grey smoke again once. then cleared and ran normal.

So its using engine oil (3L in 2kmiles) and appears to run normally at <2k rpm, but smokes when in higher rev range until i guess the excess oil in the intake has burned off?

what do we think? turbo? Cheers

James

Have a good look for any signs of oil in the coolant tank and also any leaks around the oil cooler and down the back of the engine.

Have you confirmed that the turbo drain mod was indeed done? The revised drain can be spotted looking up towards the back of the engine from near ground level in the vicinity of the left headlight.

level

those symptoms are what i would expect of a vehicle overfilled with oil/passing oil

worth draining it,checking amount and refilling with correct amount if there is too much in it

gauges are fine until they fail...

Darin mod def been done, in my ownership. it cured a problem at the time with using engine oil, this was approx 15k ago. 2 years.

has now recently (Jan) started using oil again.

my investigation shows it only uses oil above 2500rpm, pulled the air intake and you can see oil just after the air filter in the air ducting, plus oil coming out the intercooler outlet.

i am presuming the oil is coming from the 2nd turbo seals having failed, its leaking and sitting in the ducting/intercooler and then getting blown into engine when the vehicles goes over 2500rpm when CSOV opens.

the oil in the intake after air filter is backfeed from the pipe that joins the air intake just above the location of the CSOV. i am not sure where this pipe comes from. anyone know?

oil level could be wrong, i added to it when vehicle told me it was low, having confirmed level with a Hawkeye. It hadnt been using oil upto Jan 19 though. service was Oct 18, there was some loss of oil due to the sump plug not been done up tight enough! that was all over the underbody tray and very obviously coming from the sump plug.

this is pipe from intake to turbo, oil in here is coming from the small pipe that joins this pipe approx 100mm down from where photo is.

here it is fitted

lots of oil

 Cheers

James

Adding 3L of oil relying on the electronic sensor is fraught with danger. I urge you to not rev the engine and to immediately get the oil drained and refilled with the correct volume regardless of what the sensor is showing. If the sensor shows that a lot of oil is still needed then have the sensor replaced. 3L more oil in the engine than meant to be is risking at least blowing seals everywhere and the likelihood of a runaway engine.

ok, i will drain it tomorrow or wednesday and refill.

9l is it to fill complete? presume the filter drains down?

on reflection the vehicle has had lumpy idle and there have been signs of white/grey ish smoke in the early part of this year on initial acceleration. at the time i put it down to cold air temp but it makes a bit more sense now to have been burnt oil.

i stripped out the air intake as i could see the oil here on the join:

prior to adding the 3L so it was entering the air intake before i added 3L to it last monday.

So does no one else add oil when the car tells them to?

anyone know what pipe joins the air intake below that elbow? Cheers

James

I think 9 litres is too much as a starting point.
It will take it up to maximum on the gauge when the new oil is cold, but when the engine gets up to normal working temperature it will show as “ Overfilled “

I recommend putting 8 litres in as a starting point.
Then bring it up to temperature. The filter will fill, then top up as required by adding no more than 0.5 litre at a time.

ok 8l thanks.

anyone:
any ideas as to why i would get grey/white smoke over 2500rpm only and have the oil in the air intake prior to adding the 3L? Cheers

James

That pipe goes to the change-over valve. The oil could be there because the sump is over-filled or due to a failure of a turbo or possibly the crankcase ventilation system.

Mine has never needed oil between my earlier 15K km and now 10K km changes, let alone getting down to requesting that oil be added.

thank you for info on the pipe.

neither has mine used oil between services since the drain mod , but reality is i have oil coming up that pipe prior to adding the 3l it was definitely burning the oil prior to the add of 3L.

so overfilled or not its burning oil.

i personally do not believe its overfilled.

i believe the larger turbo has gone, oil is sitting in the CSOV until the engine is opened up and then it gets burnt off or comes up that pipe and contaminates the new pre turbo air coming in which then gets burnt off.

how would these symptoms differ to a turbo seal having failed. Cheers

James
