Rear Disc Brakes - Question

Hi folks,

I need to change the discs brakes but do not have the IID Tools to put the brakes in the mounting postion. Do I need one? Its a simple disc off and new disc on scenario.

I am under the impression mounting postion is required to change the shoes but may be wrong.

Please can someone advise of the steps involved. Is there any other tool out there that could put it in the mounting position? Current:

You can slacken off the handbrake shoe adjuster manually, then just remove the disk. It might be necessary to electronically drive into the mounting position if you need to replace the handbrakes shoes, but they can be cleaned up quite well in posisition in my opinion. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

You dont need an iid tool. Get the car all ready key in position 2 and chocs under the front wheels and other side your not doing then select neutral and release the handbrake. Keep the button pulled up and then turn the key off. You can then have the rear wheels free to spin to locate the adjustment cog so you can get th old disc off by slackening it. Plenty of guides on here and search bodsys brake bible on google for the replacement and readjustment procedure once both sides are done. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

Thanks.. is it not that the parking brake is applied automatically when the door is shut? I read somewhere here there I should leave the door open. Current:

Parking brake is not applied automatically on MY 2010. I understand that can be enabled in CCF from 2011 onwards. Even then, it is applied when ignition turned off, not when door is opened. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Cheers..

So before switching the ignition off, if I ensure the EPB is off and then leave the door open. Its a simple matter of swapping the discs over?

Theres a bit more to it as you need to loosen the cog off take the disc off. New one on and tighten the cog then back it off and then do the handbrake adjustment process which invokves driving and pulling the handbrake on a few times Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

This is from the d3 forum but has most of the info needed. https://disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/userpi...1.4sml.pdf

It sounds complicated written down but its not. Its a case of being able to access the brake shoe cogs to loosen it off to get the dics off and then to get it on and be able to have the ebrake work and he shoes not to be dragging. Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue

Have a look at Bodsy’s Brake Bible, Version 1.6a

My understanding is it’s all the same across the range of LR vehicles Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Might help but I’m not 100% sure the EPB function is same. Caveat.

I did mine on both my D3 and my FF (2009) using Bodsy's brake bible. They are very similar though i remember there being a few very minor differences.

When you have the EPB off, make sure you pull the fuse to ensure it can't be activated while your working on it. Apart from the obvious injury risk its a lot more work to sort it out if you apply the EPB with the disk off.

The other thing that can be an absolute Censored is the retaining screw on each disk. A decent impact driver is a good idea. I had to grind notches in mine and attack it with a cold chisel. Took me hours... 2016 Skoda Octavia VRS Estate

Not sure if it's off any use but I think when DM did my disco EPB unjam I am sure he said you don't need to bed them in
Then I replaced the discs and shoes I didn't bed them and everything worked fine
I would say if you are doing the job use all new springs and retainers back the adjuster right off remove the epb fuse take a photo before you dismantle and make sure you rebuild correctly and follow the adjustments correctly because if you don't the cables will over tighten and you need to unjam or replace the epb module both of which are an absolute nite mare and that's speaking from experience Thumbs Up

If you are just replacing the discs then its a simple job. Same as doing combination of disc and drum brakes.
First thing to do is make sure EPB is off and either pull the fuse or, as I prefer, remove the Negative lead from the battery.
Then remove the caliper and then the carrier. Spin the disc to line up the hole with the adjuster and back it right off. Undo disc retaining screw and it comes off easily.
Now is the time to change the handbrake shoes if you are doing them too. As suggested, have new retaining pins and springs as they do weaken and are only another £5 or so per side. There are no special tools needed.
There is no need to use an iid or any other diagnostic tool if you isolate power to the EPB before even taking a wheel off.
I actually bought new shoes, springs and pins when I changed the rear discs last month but found they were virtually brand new so didnt end up swapping them.
Its a simple job though. 2007 Vogue TDV8 in Zermatt Silver with Charcoal
