Turbo drain mod

Guys I know a ton has already been posed on here about the above but wanted to ask does this affect ALL 4.4 tdv8s? If not is there a specific year or vin series which are affected.

Are there any lucky ones who haven't required this mod? The reason I ask is I'm going to look at a car on Wed so just want to make sure I'm prepared.

The revised turbo drain was not factory-fitted to any L322 nor to early L405s. The TSB shows the affected VIN ranges.

the tsb is in the wiki...


the mod is for an oil drain on the second turbo which generally is not used as it only comes into play at around 2500rpm...because its not used oil accumulates and then when you do 'boot' the engine clouds of smoke comes out of the exhaust ..

And again, drive it properly, and you won’t have an issue......slog round at 1500rpm and on the occasional slip road bootfull you will get a cloud of smoke....

You pays your money makes your choice. Personally if a cars had it done fine, but now they are out of warranty and it’s a put your hand in your pocket job, I’m saving my cash, not risking a bodge job, and just enjoying the car, and using the second turbo as it was designed......

Mine has never had the mod, and I only get the problem when it’s been to the garage and they have started and moved it about several times.

The issue is that pressurised oil has nowhere to go when the engine is switched off, when it’s on it can circulate so there isn’t an issue, so it seeps into the turbo a tiny bit at a time while it’s off. If the turbo isn’t operating it builds up. So when the turbo does get used on that slip road you get the clouds of smoke. It’s down to how much it is switched on and off between the turbo being used. Hence the issue when it goes to the garage, on - move - off - on - move - off etc. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

And no, despite tales of cataclysmic damage from stealers / independents that want business from the gullible, I don’t lose sleep at night.

just to add that there are suspicions that not having he mod done will somehow affect the dpf but its not certain this is true..

A friend of mine bought a low milage 405 4.4TDV8... The first time we drove went for a bit of a run out, over the bridge to wales and about an hour into our journey, all hell brakes loose from the exhaust!!!

I thought it was the mother of all re-gen's!!! Obviously my friend was concerned for a few moments (this probably carried on for 5 seconds or so)

The smoke was bad enough that all vehicles behind took evasive action!

This happened more and more frequently until he booked it in under warranty and the mod was done... His car had covered 30k...

My guess is some might go worse than others??? Maybe his cars previous owner never used the second turbo? Either way, it was not just a wisp or a puff...

Mine hasn't had the mod done (yet), I was concerned about the DPF and actually monitored the soot load when I knew I was going to cause plenty of blue smoke. It didn't make any difference, gave it full throttle and sure enough quite a cloud to start with but cleared after 30 to 40 seconds and the soot load was unchanged. In my mind the particles in the blue smoke will be too fine for the DPF to hang onto and therefore pass straight through.

Not sure whether to have the mod done, I haven't found anybody I'd trust yet and the main stealer was silly money. I just open it up whenever I get chance to use 2500 to 3000 rpm, all seems fine.

just to add my experiences which differ in opinion to what many consider on here.

i bought a 2012 with 37k on it. FSH.

no noticeable smoke from it over a mix of driving, some being spirited and some more gentle driving.

My engine was using engine oil when it was pushed on it a bit, 3krpm + work.

Did some trial and error and although i was having no smoke issues it was found the oil consumption was related to the use of the 2nd turbo which didnt have the drain mod. drive 1000miles below 3000rpm all the time no oil consumption. drive 1000miles always pushing on above 3krpm and it used oil.

Had the modification to drain done, 15k miles ago and not used a drop of oil since with combined mix of driving and heavy towing.

So my understanding is if you tend to drive <2500rpm>2500/3000rpm you may well see oil consumption which is whats been burnt through greater use of the 2nd turbo and it would be beneficial to get the mod done.

I have not mad any smoke issues from mine and dont believe you can just boot a 4.4 look at the exhaust output and determine whether it either needs the mod or the mod has been done.

you can look at the turbo and see if the mod has been done. Cheers

Mines not had the mod done. I dont get chance to put my foot down much so earlier this year it smoked quite a bit on start up and moving away....then was ok.

Went to garage and was told there is a flap somewhere in the pipework that opens to equalise pressure between the turbos when the second turbo spins up. He said oiled seeps through the seal in the turbo and sits behind the flap, which builds up and then you have smoke when you eventually put your foot down and the flap opens.

Now I try and go over 2500rpm every journey at least once to open the flap...never had an issue since. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Quite agree with the over 2500 once per trip - sounds like a plan from now on. Like NMJ says the second turbo is there and it should be used as designed.

I've not had the mod and neither have I lost any sleep over it.

Strange thing has happened tho - I undertook a spirited drive a couple of months ago (you know the sort you only do late on a Sunday on your own and then reflect what silly boy you've been later). I had smoke the first over 2500 event then nothing as you would expect. The funny thing is I've gone over 2500 a couple of times since then and no smoke. I've actually deliberately tried and nothing.

Tonight we are using the FF for the first time in a couple of weeks. I'm going to try again..... Twisted Evil 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

Once mine has cleared the oil out 30 to 40 seconds I have to do 20 or 30 miles of below 2500 driving before it build up enough to make a noticeable amount of smoke. BMW i3 Electric Car

Believe me, if you are “not worried about it” then you don’t need it done.

If you were getting anything like the smoke clouds I was getting before the mod, you would be worried.

I think the fact that the M62 and M6 were both subject to mile upon mile of 50mph roadworks restrictions was also a major factor with mine, because it was very difficult to give it a regular clear out, but when I did, I could not see anything out of the rear mirror through the fog.

Even my MD workshop manager agreed on a test run, “it’s pretty bad” quote.
