There are two.

One of them is above the sub frame cross member and makes a mess when you undo it...

If I remember correctly the sump has a baffle in the middle so that regardless of the angle the vehicle's at the pump should always get oil. Doesn't normally matter on road vehicles but on the kinds of angles these are capable of it comes into play.

Similar reason but different implementation with race cars where sustained cornering might keep oil away from the pick-up. Where this might be an issue they tend to be dry-sump designs though. Ed

The turbos drain into a separate reservoir towards the rear which if not drained ends-up becoming filled with sludge, risking proper flow from the turbo drains.

I think early 3.6 tdv8 engines might have only one because I have ordered service kits from the UK for a 2007 3.6 and a 2011 3.6 and the 2007 had 1 oil plug while the 2011 had two. I'm very far from an expert on this so please check or listen to way more knowledgeable posters on here 2015 4.4 AB
