Can anyone advise refill volume for rear ETM diffs AJV8 2006 the manual says volume for this diff is 1.55 ltrs and do not allow fill to overflow from fill hole. My diiff has only done 90k and has no leaks but I have emptied the diff and only got 1.25ltrs Sooo -- I am not sure whether its ok to refill with 1.55 ltrs in case there is some oil still in the diff. Has anyone done their diff and knows what the go is.

My concerns arose when I checked the manual to change oil in front diff its says the diff holds 800ml and only refill with 750 ml so I gather the rear diff will have some equivalent guidance - but not in the manual unfortunately.

Mine has the same diff and the owners manual states 1.6L dry fill, 1.55L refill after drain. I put in 1.6L when I swapped the open diff for an e-diff 2 years ago.

The diffs are heavy - 2 people struggled with jacks but we got there. A hoist with an appropriate equipment jack would have made the task much easier.
The control unit has to be wired in - new RDCU connectors and pins sourced and a hand-made short loom from the combination harness connector and the purchase of the ediff/hand-brake/FBH heater pump combination harness to replace the version without the ediff.

Finding a s/h ediff from a L322 4.4 TDV8 was the hardest part. The L322 4.4 TDV8's ratios are different to all others.

Thanks Graeme yesterday I finished the oil change on the front and rear diffs and transfer case.

The answer to my question on the rear diff refill volume became apparent.

When I emptied the rear diff I got 1.25ltrs. the manual says it holds 1.55ltrs. However when I refilled the diff the overflow started to weep oil out at about 1.25 ltrs so I was able to get a tad over that in and seal the fill plug, I would say I got about 1.28ltrs in anymore and it was just coming back out.

So I am not sure how one can get 1.55ltrs in maybe there is a technique, anyway I know I have refilled to the level that was in the diff before I emptied it.

You have obviously had a lot hard work with your diff problems thanks again.

Are you sure that you have an ediff?

I've not had problems with the diff. I had been on the lookout for a used ediff after having an ediff in a D4 then not finding a an L322 with an ediff and getting the L322 stuck on my council-maintained lane, albeit amongst large rocks that had been dumped into this particular mud-hole where rock-crawl wasn't enough but perhaps an ediff may have been.

Hi Graeme thank you for help after your question whether I have an Ediff I went and had a good look at my diff and its not an Ediff its the Open diff so thanks for your intuition.

This explains the lesser oil volume. So its good and bad now I am about to change the oil and at least I will have the correct oil in the diff but my DIY pride has taken a blow not to mention wasting the very expensive oil.

The quest for Range Rover knowledge arhhh.

No harm in using ediff oil in an open diff other than the hole in your pocket.
