4.4 TDV8 sounds like wastegate chatter....

Hi all some advice been looking at so many TDV8s and finally found a very tidy example but when I took it on a test drive the only thing that was noticeable was what almost sounded like waste gate chatter on slight acceleration/changing up.

I've searched to see some others have had this also but no actual answer to what it is or is it something to be worried about.

Annoyingly aside from the leaky O-rings I spotted also it was very well looked after example. I've put a holding deposit down but can change my mind if needed.

At the right part-throttle opening and revs, changing up on mine can cause the secondary inlet isolation valve to flutter as revs drop below the rpm threshold for the valve to be open when it was open in the lower gear. It most often occurs when easing off the throttle after getting the revs up a little to get off the mark. Holding the throttle open to get the revs higher before easing off avoids the flutter, as does manually up-shifting before the engine gets anywhere near 2000 rpm.

What people call “wastegate chatter” is actually the noise of the air in the inlet tract going back into the turbo compressor when the throttle plate is closed. It’s the reason OEM stuff has recirculating bypass valves, to stop the noise and to protect the turbo bearings.

It was coming from the OS of the engine could hear it inside the car and also if you revved it quite hard stationary through the air box on that side also, obviously noise only happens when you close the throttle so to speak.

I've seen others have had the actuators replaced which cured for a while then the noise returned

If it was a modified "RICE" car I wouldn't have taken notice but sounds odd on a RR. It wasn't ridiculously loud but enough to think what is that.

Test drive another one and see if it does the same is the obvious answer.

The td6's have a kind of dump valve whistle when backing off the revs. Some people notice it others don't.

All owners of 4,4tdv8's can provoke this noise by reversing up a steep gradient and open the throttle heavily... Equally you can apply a bit of left foot braking and heavy throttle input... Worth experiencing this phenomenon before it catches you out one day... Can sound quite worrying if your not expecting it... Thumbs Up

Craig, is this "chatter" a problem; I mean, does it damage the engine in any way? Or is it just a "they all do that Sir" and we shouldn't worry about it?
