Mysterious coolant loss......

I had the low coolant warning due to the known sensor issue, changed to the new style reservoir and all was well, now I'm losing coolant and having to top up weekly, no signs of the coolant dripping out anywhere so I'm guessing it's leaking somewhere hot and evaporating?
I can see some liquid dripping from underneath but I think it's from the air con
Guess my question is -
Is it easy to locate the air con out let to rule it out and has anyone else seen this coolant issue??

Get the head gasket tested to eliminate that.

These cars can loose coolant from several areas without it dripping on the ground. EGR coolers can leak back into the exhaust, thermostat housing can crack and leak into the V and evaporate. Then as suggested above the head gaskets can go
And they do not always give the usual creamy white oil or show gases in the coolant. Mine did have crusty white deposits on the tips of the exhausts when mine went.

To check what the fluid is leaking under the car get a white sheet under there. Coolant is pink and tastes sweet where air con water is clear and is just distilled water.

Get the coolant system pressure tested and see if you have a drop in pressure is a good start.
Then see if any of your carpets are wet and if you get full heat from all of the blowers.

Hi

New here

we had the same happen to ours, coolant level dropped, leaked some water underneath car.
took it to LR Upt, mechanic said it must be some old piping that is leaking.

turned out the heater core had a hole rusted (and yes, it aluminum... Shocked ) in one of the pipes, which then sprayed water on the suspension, radio and gearbox modules.

cost a pretty penny to fix Sad

maybe let the dealer have a look at that, just to make sure.

Cheers for all the info, it's definitely the air con dripping underneath. Heater works fine and carpets are dry
Hope to get out and have a look around all the pipes etc this week then move onto pressure / head gasket checks.
Are there any other signs the head gaskets gone? I remember my old Nova GSI temperature gauge moved constantly when it went on that!

You can get a coolant sniffer test kit for not much money. Plenty on Amazon and easy to use! Previous cars:

Also the expansion tank and cap are known to fail after about 10 yrs the tanks crack and also the cap can lose its pressure capability
If that happens the coolant is only lost while under pressure which also means hot so any escaped coolant will just evaporate so there will be no trace of the leak

So...checked everything I could see without any luck, then today big pool of coolant under the car traced it to the passengers side just behind the fuel filter, looks like it's coming from behind a heat shield, everything was hot so I've not looked any further. Is there a parts cat that would show what's lurking behind the heat shield?
I've attached some photos if anyone can tell what it is??

Found it! Temperature control valve (no Cool looks favourite
I also appear to have an air blast oil cooler (no 11) the manual states -

An additional air blast engine oil cooler is mounted in the RH front wheel arch for enhanced oil cooling performance at high speeds (supercharged derivatives only).

Mines a TDV8 not supercharged?!? Anybody else have this? Have I misunderstood?

Mine had a very similar leak, rhs of radiatior, little hose about half way up, rubber around the clamp had perished, cut half an inch off, reclamped anc all was good Thumbs Up

Never had any coolant show under the car, but needed a top up every couple of weeks 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Dan, so was mine when I bought it. It took a while to find it. It was the expansion tank/reservoir. The tank had a 200kPa cap, not the correct 140kPa cap. (Look at the number on the underside of the cap.) Ron B. VK2OTC

Will do mate thanks, however it's only just started doing it and I've had it a few years now so guessing it's not the lid.

Check Coolant came on towards the start of a journey and as I had a bottle of coolant in the boot I pressed on to see if it got too hot or not, 35 miles later and still running perfectly fine, topped up the coolant and drove home again later in the day, had a look and there is coolant all over the expansion tank as well as the other two containers that are near it so I'm wondering if it's over pressurising lately or if the expansion tank has a leak and is now squirting liquid out from one of the bonded seals in the tank?

Nothing blatantly pouring out when the car is sat idling (far too easy eh!) so either get the wife to sit under the bonnet with a torch on the next trip out or remove the expansion tank and see if any visible holes I guess? How much is a pressure test? Dan

Just checked and it is a 200 cap. So is that wrong for a 4.4l petrol as it's a bit strange is only just started blowing out after 3 years of owning it? Dan
