Hi guys I recently noticed a police siren like noise coming from engine only at 1500 to 2000 rpm and fades as I increase revs I haven’t noticed a loss in power and no black smoke could it be a split or loose hose? Any ideas or advise much appreciated and if it turns out to be a knackered turbo can anybody point me in the right direction to either have mine reconditioned or who to buy a recon unit from.

i'd check out the hoses first...if possible take them off and look on the underside and inside.. ... - .- -.

This is s bizzare one guys still got the high pitched siren like sound when car is ticking over its low pitched then when I give it some throttle it get louder and more high pitched but fades off at about 2000rpm any ideas please. Checked all hoses and air filter box etc all good

I think your turbo is on the way out.
My car had the police siren sound for a few years, but ultimately I had to replace my turbo.

New turbo, no siren noise.

My bmw 530d began sounding like a police siren. Indeed it was the turbo failing but I just left it and traded the car in!

have used the myself and there work is excellent 2007 tdv8 se ,stornaway grey

Hi guys this is a strange one I can hear the whining noise more so under revs only unto 2000rpm at the back of car near rear tyre could this be diff related any ideas the sound is more noticeable at rear of car than in engine bay after more investigation.

Our Td6 was exactly the same. Noisy up to about 2000rpm, then fine. I was convinced at one stage that the whining was loudest around the n/s rear wheel and thought it might be the cill mounted fuel pump. I took it to my local garage for them to listen, we put it over their pit, ran it up to 1500rpm and put a long screwdriver blade on the turbo, and with the handle to your ear you could clearly hear it whistling.

I got a reconditioned turbo from Universal Turbos, who had recently taken over CR Turbos, who I had used before and who were excellent. After fitting, the turbo dumped loads of oil into the engine. I called Universal Turbos who said that it couldn’t be faulty as they were all tested, they blamed the breather (which I had already replaced), and then accused the garage of using sealant on the gaskets. Eventually after speaking to the garage they replaced it under warranty.

I have since replaced the turbo on our 5 series BMW and I got a reconditioned turbo from Essex Turbos. They were very helpful, and provided a really good service, including supplying new feed and drain pipes.

Cheers for info really strange as doesn't explain why we can hear the whining siren noise at rear wheel area more so than in engine area! but when sat in car you can hear it in drivers seat
