My bmw 530d began sounding like a police siren. Indeed it was the turbo failing but I just left it and traded the car in! |

Our Td6 was exactly the same. Noisy up to about 2000rpm, then fine. I was convinced at one stage that the whining was loudest around the n/s rear wheel and thought it might be the cill mounted fuel pump. I took it to my local garage for them to listen, we put it over their pit, ran it up to 1500rpm and put a long screwdriver blade on the turbo, and with the handle to your ear you could clearly hear it whistling.

Yes, it’s very odd how the sound seems to be coming from the rear wheel area. Try the screwdriver trick. |
