Scotland 2017 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Corris Grey

Thanks, that was just me speculating, the starter motor has been changed now and all working again. They said "when we tested it, it was overheating very quickly". A neighbour with a 60 reg 4.4 TDV8 said his one had been replaced a while ago and that they were a known problem area, perhaps it is just poor quality components. Apparently JLR get the defective ones back for remanufacturing, as also compressors. Only Range Rovers since 1988

i did think that but it starts first time when its not below freezing, but i will keep your suggestion on file in me head.. Thumbs Up

I have had this on other vehicles where a small amount of water has got into the starter motor. It behaves fine normally but when below zero the water freezes enough to stop the motor working. Some times a couple of turns of the key will free it but if it's really cold it will be solid.

@GDM, you've hit the nail on the head there....mine has in the past had the 'click' and no start but then during the recent cold 'dry' snap i've had no problem starting..
toady now the thaw is taking hold ,everything is wet and the click no start has come back suggesting water in the starter as you've reported.. ... - .- -.

As to battery choice.

This seems to be a common FFRR failure after 2 - 3 years, so I go with highest AH and CCA and a 5 year warranty.

If it fails again, I won't be paying for it... Very Happy
