Sluggish / very flat pick up from standstill

any advice appreciated folks,

Noticed a problem with the pick up / acceleration of the car from standstill...it seems "flat". Not completely gutless but definitely not right. Once moving, and at higher revs, the acceleration seems fine...it's just the initial "moving off" to say 20 or 30 low down the rev range, I defo have to plant the accelerator pedal more.

Noticed it earlier in the week - but stuck my head in the sand about it or tried to convince myself I was imagining it but today the wife drove the car for the first time this week and I get a phone call saying "what the hells wrong with the car?"

I'll hook my GAP up in the morning to see if any error codes but was wondering if folk had any ideas...split turbo hose? EGR failure? etc etc . (no error messages on the dashboard by the way and its not limp home mode / restricted performance....I've had that in another life time....and this is no where near that restricted)

Thanks

Hi

If you are getting lots of smoke, more than usual, them it’s a split intake hose.

Yes it is under warranty but I don’t work like that. I always like to have an idea of what it can be before I have to deal with the BS dealerships give. I have lost count of the number of times I have gone to them with problems and their response is “can’t find any fault sir ....computer says no” Confused

Fair enough , luckily I have a local dealer that is pretty trustworthy and likes to please which I know is rare.

It might just be worth checking that one of the rear brake calipers is not sticking?
They get pretty hot if sticking, so be careful touching the wheels. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Are rear calipers on 405s prone to sticking. Just asking as had to replace both on mine just at 86k? 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

Could it be anything to do with the Auto Terrain Response starting off in Snow/Ice mode due to low ambient temperatures at the moment?

Plugged in my GAP tool - no error codes reported.

No wheels/brakes binding

Had a quick look for any intake pipe splits but of course it’s hard to see much with everything packed in the engine bay these days.

Interesting thought about the auto terrain response deliberately retarding ignition based on current ambient temps but I have no idea what parameters it uses to determine which mode to be in. I guess I can put it into manual mode and see if it makes any difference. But equally I would have thought other owners would be experiencing and reporting the same as me if it was the AUTO terrain.

well, well well

just been out to try what 5.0 suggested. - took the car out of Auto Terrain Response and put it into "general" and ......

hey presto - back to normal!!! happy days. Very Happy

So lesson learned. The only thing that surprises me is that (given I've only had a L405 for 2 minutes) I always assumed AUTO Terrain Response would show on the dashboard which mode it was putting the car into if it switched away from "general"... clearly not.

Many thanks to all - especially 5.0.

It is daft that the dash doesn't display the mode the Auto Terrain Response has selected for you. You can only tell if you switch it out of auto and then find what mode you are in. It is also a little basic to change the throttle map purely because of a low ambient temperature. It would make sense to only do this once the traction control senses loss of traction combined with a lower temperature.
