Sorry guys, but can anyone tell me is it okay when waiting at lights to leave it in D with the handbrake on? I used to have a mercedes and this feature was brilliant- I live in a busy city..
Also, how do I connect iphone7 to the hands free??? doesn't seem to want to..

I guess it depends on how long you are talking about.

Most people keep their foot on the brake with the car in D until it''s time to move.

Even in hilly areas like mine, the autobox will hold the car still on a slope long enough for you to move your foot to the accelerator pedal without it rolling back.

Newer cars have the electonic parking brake which allows for hill start release.

If its just normal lights with a normal changing period, then yes, its likely to be OK. As already said, lots of people will do effectively the same thing by sitting on the brake pedal at standstill when at lights. If its longer periods like road work lights where you may be waiting minutes, then I take it out of drive and put it in neutral.

Is it going to wear things out in the box ... not really unless you do it for ages. ... but it will eat fuel quicker. When in drive, the gearbox is trying to push the car forward at crawl speed, and the engine is supplying that demand. Yes, the engine stays at idle speed, but it'll be working to keep it at idle as its pushing against the brake just maintain idle revs. Putting it in N or P will take that demand off the engine and it'll use less fuel.


Generally ... my rule of thumb is that if I'm stopping long enough to get bored of pressing the brake and putting the handbrake on, then i'll also put it in neutral as well.

It takes a fraction of a second to flick it back into drive and pull away. the handbrake will auto release when you pull away as well. V8 or else ...

I think the handbook says that one should not sit with the car in drive and the brake on for extended periods, you might like to check. I always put it into neutral and the handbrake on, finding that it is not much effort, also in the dark one does not dazzle the driver behind with the brake lights that way. Only Range Rovers since 1988
